Kosciusko County Solid Waste Board held their last meeting of the year Tuesday.
Solid Waste Director Sue Studebaker told the board she's investigating the possibility of the Solid Waste District saving money on electronic recycling next year. Studebaker said Intercon Solutions, Chicago Heights, Ill., would offer a contract in which the company would provide 40-48-foot trailers to collect electronic items to be recycled and charge $600 each time they pull away a full trailer.Studebaker said Chesapeake Recycling, of Winamac, the current company the district contracts with, provides smaller trailers and charges $650 to pull them away.
Intercon charges 15 cents per pound to recycle televisions. Currently, Studebaker said the district takes televisions to Osborn Services, Warsaw, to be recycled. She said the district will probably break even on television recycling costs, but save money on all other electronic recycling if they contract with Intercon.
"We would definitely be saving money," said Studebaker.
The board approved the purchase of an awning to cover the oil and antifreeze deposit area on the south side of the Solid Waste Office, 220 S. Union St., Warsaw. Studebaker said the awning will prevent messes caused by rain and snow falling on the oil containers. The awning will cost $1,840. Studebaker said the department has the money in its budget.
