Warsaw's Sectional Run Ends

Posted

For the first time in Tony Boley's four years as Warsaw wrestling coach, the Tigers failed to win the sectional team title.

Plymouth ended Warsaw's run Saturday.

Plymouth won the team championship with 220 points. Warsaw finished second with 176, followed by Triton with 110 and Tippecanoe Valley 103.

Champions for Warsaw were Anthony Boley (103 pounds), Isaac Perry (160), Richard Wolfe (171), Kris Hueber (215) and Joey Navarro (275).

Triton had two champions, sophomore Errik Lemler (112), and freshman Tate Chapman (140), while Tippecanoe Valley had one champion, Wes Ramsey (145).

First- and second-place finishers advance to Saturday's regional competition in Goshen.Ê Plymouth sends 13 wrestlers to compete in the regional: six sectional champions and seven second-place finishers.

The Warsaw Sectional is characterized by youth. Of the 14 champions, only five were seniors, while there were three juniors, five sophomores and one freshman. Of the 28 regional qualifiers, 22 are underclassmen.

Warsaw Coach Tony Boley said, "I felt bad for several of our guys who came so close to winning but missed out by just a point or two."

Adam Bott (130) lost a 2-0 decision to Tippecanoe Valley's Kevin Day. Bott returned in the consolation round to pin Triton's Nathan Vining in 1:59.Ê David Sumpter (140) was edged out in a 5-4 decision by Triton's Tate Chapman, and at 189, Warsaw's Tyler Miller lost to Valley's Tyler Kottcamp in a 5-2 decision.

Sumpter came back to take third by pinning Valley's Nathan Strohschein in 3:48. Tyler Miller was pinned in the consolation round by Plymouth's Lee Ulmer in 3:49.

Warsaw's Micah Siesennop in 3:12.

Valley had four runners-up, including Tim Miller (119), who reached the finals by a first-round forfeit. In the championship, Miller lost to Plymouth's Alex Uceny in a 6-3 decision.Ê Kevin Day (130) defeated Warsaw's Adam Bott in round one in a 2-0 decision, but in the finals, Day lost to Plymouth's Chris Hutchinson in a 16-1 technical fall at the close of the second period.

Nathan Shewman (135) beat Warsaw's Trent Plummer in round one and then lost to Chris Glaub of Plymouth in an 11-1 major decision.

Tyler Kottcamp (189) had an exceptional day, defeating Warsaw's Tyler Miller in a round one decision by a 5-2 score. In the championship, Kottcamp had the privilege of facing Plymouth's Matt Arveson, ranked No. 2 in the state.Ê Arveson customarily crunches his opponents in the first period, but he was unable to stick Kottcamp, who fought hard through all three periods.Ê

Arveson was finally able to amass back points to score a 16-0 technical fall at 5:26.Ê Arveson takes a 24-0 record to the regional, but Kottcamp is heading to Goshen as well.

Two Valley grapplers earned third-place finishes: Ben Vanlaningham (103) and Jake Long (171). Vanlaningham was pinned at 1:29 by Plymouth's Brandon Shanks in round one.Ê Vanlaningham came back in the consolation round to earn third place by a 4-0 decision over Justin Scott of Triton.

Jake Long was pinned by Goshen's Joe Quintana in round one at 3:16, but Long returned to pin Triton's Mark Smith at 1:42 to take third place.

Triton

Two sectional champions will represent Triton at the Goshen Regional: Errik Lemler (112) and Tate Chapman (140).Ê

Lemler had a forfeit in round one, and in the finals, he took first place when he edged Plymouth's Glenn Ringer 3-2.Ê

Tate Chapman is a talented Triton freshman who got by Warsaw's David Sumpter in round one. In the finals, Chapman surprised Plymouth's Jared Baker in 1:43.

William Anderson earned a third place after a first-round loss to Warsaw's Chris Riley by a 9-1 score. In the consolation round, Anderson quickly dispatched Valley's Chasity Harding in 40 seconds to take third place.

Also winning third place for Triton was Lee Ulmer, who had been squashed by Plymouth's Matt Arveson in round one in 28 seconds. Ulmer had some fight left when he pinned Warsaw's Tyler Miller at 3:49 to nab third place.

ÊWarsaw

Second-place finishers for the Tigers were freshmen Chris Riley (125) and Micah Siesennop (145), along with sophomore Nick McKinley (152).

Riley defeated Triton's William Anderson 9-1 to advance to the finals, where Riley was put to the mat in 1:09 by Plymouth's Ryan Clewell. Ê

Siesennop notched an 18-6 major decision in his round one match against Triton's Nathan Warner. In the finals, Siesennop was pinned by Valley's Wes Ramsey in 3:12.Ê

Nick McKinley recorded a 5:15 pin in his first-round match against Chad Bradley of Triton. In the finals, McKinley was pinned at 1:19 by Plymouth's state-ranked John Funk, who finished the tournament with a 22-2 record.

Warsaw coach Tony Boley was pleased with two of his Tigers who collected their first championships in any varsity tournament.

Anthony Boley (103) dominated his weight class with two solid pins. In round one, Boley stuck Triton's Justin Scott in 2:47, and in the championship, the Warsaw sophomore nailed Plymouth's Brandon Shanks in 1:29.Ê

Richard Wolfe (171) flattened Triton's Mark Smith in 48seconds. Wolfe took the championship by good motion on his feet and by pounding Plymouth's Chris Mayfor a 5-1 victory.

The Tigers' "big three," Isaac Perry, Kris Hueber and Joey Navarro, each had forfeits in the first round, but then they had to fight through tough matches in the finals to win championships.Ê

Perry (160) scored a 16-2 major decision over Plymouth's Chris May. Perry, who is ranked No. 6 in the state, takes a 30-1 record to the regional.

Hueber scored an 11-2 major decision over Plymouth's Mark Palbykin. The 11th-ranked Hueber now boasts a 29-2 record.Ê

Navarro (275) tussled with Shay Beaver of Plymouth in the championship round. In the first period, Navarro scored a takedown on a nice trip, and in period two from the down position after just six seconds, had elapsed.

Then in the final stanza, after several failed attempts, Navarro was at last able to turn over Beaver and squeeze a fall at 5:23. Ranked at No. 3 in the state, Navarro will take his 30-1 record to Goshen, where he will attempt to repeat as regional champion in an effort to return to the state finals.
