Warsaw's Johnson Finishes Eighth

FRANKLIN - The defending state champion, Warsaw sophomore Emily Johnson found herself tied for second-place and in position with a chance to repeat after shooting a 73 in Friday's first round of the 32nd annual girls golf state finals at Legends of Indiana in Franklin.

Unfortunately for Johnson, things didn't go her way the final 18 holes of the 36-hole tournament.

She shot an 11-over score of 83 Saturday, dropping her out of contention for the individual state championship. Her two-day total of 156 left her in eighth place.

After a round Friday that included three birdies and four bogeys, Johnson's round of 83 Saturday included five bogeys and three double bogeys.

North Decatur junior Angela Gauck won the individual state championship with a two-day total of 147, shooting a 73 Friday and 74 Saturday. Penn junior Julia Potter shot the exact same scores both days and finished second after losing a playoff situation.

Evansville Memorial junior Ellen Mueller finished third with a 149, followed in the top 10 by Muncie Central's Michelle Morgan (151), Western's Lauren Showers (151), Martinsville's Kayley Bodine (153), Bloomington North's Manisha Patel (154), Johnson, Western's Amber Lindgren (156) and Greensburg's Kelsea Ice (158).

Morgan was in first after Friday's round with a 70, while Gauck, Potter and Johnson all shot 73.

In the team competition, Potter got her state championship as her and her teammates shot a two-day team total of 653, beating Western by five strokes.

Martinsville shot a 661 to finish third, followed in the top nine by Noblesville (673), Evansville Memorial (677), Carmel (677), Mishawaka Marian (678), Greensburg (679) and Yorktown (709).

Only the top nine teams advanced from Friday's first round.

Richmond shot a 340 Friday and missed the cut by one stroke, while Warsaw missed the cut by two strokes.
