Warsaw Board of Zoning Appeals Monday approved a variance from development standards to permit an oversized sign in a medical district. Applicant Jay De Los Reyes, Kosciusko Community Hospital chief operating officer, requested a 10-foot sign be located at 1205 Provident Drive. The current sign is 8 feet. Ron Shoemaker, board member, moved to approve increasing the sign square footage, seconded by Jack Wilhite. The sign is for the Beyer Medical Building. De Los Reyes said a new imaging center will be opened that will be listed on the sign. “Some of the things we have encountered is that we have become busier as a result of the traffic. We see a lot of people stopping without the physicians’ names being on the signs on Provident Drive to figure out where to go,” De Los Reyes said. He said placing a larger sign with the doctors’ names will be helpful and help with a safety issue. Tom Allen, board president, agreed with increasing the sign height. “The current sign is hard to see and is challenging. I have been there and once someone stopped in front of me,” Allen said.
