The Tiger wrestlers had their balloon burst Tuesday evening in a crushing 63-3 defeat at the hands of Elkhart Memorial, the defending Northern Lakes Conference champs.
The Chargers boast five wrestlers with preseason rankings. Adam Andrews (112 pounds), a junior, is ranked number 10 in the state. Kyle Morningstar (130), also a junior, is ranked seventh. Senior, Brett Bingaman (145) is 12th and classmate Nick Corpe (171) is ranked eighth, while Calvin Walterhouse, also a senior, is ranked third at 152 pounds.
"I only told the team that Memorial is the defending conference champ, but we let ourselves be intimidated and we were very sloppy. I hoped we would battle, but we were just absolutely intimidated," said Warsaw coach Tony Boley.
The lone victory for Warsaw was posted by senior Chris Elvidge (135 pounds), who defeated Andy Strawser by a score of 6-1.
Warsaw's other senior, Bobby Derbyshire (152) was ahead 5-1 when his opponent, Calvin Walterhouse, got free and found himself in control with a reverse cradle. Walterhouse then transformed the cradle into a tight headlock and won by fall at 3:21.
Coach Boley pointed to several of the Tigers who put up a fight.
Johnny Mattson (103) was narrowly edged at the buzzer by Nick Datena, 7-6.
Freshman Matt Elvidge (112) held his own against Kyle Morningstar through a scoreless first period and never gave up, although he wound up the loser, 7-2.
Andy Keener (145), was down 5-2 going into the third period against Brett Bingaman, but the Tiger freshman showed considerable fight against the ranked Charger senior when he was able to tie the score at 5-5. Bingaman went on to get the victory, however, 8-6.
Warsaw takes a 5-1 record (0-1 NLC) to the Valparaiso Invitational Saturday. In fact, the remainder of the Tiger season is on the road. The next dual meet will be December 9 against NLC foe Plymouth.
