Warsaw Wrestlers Fall To Elkhart Memorial

Posted

ELKHART - Warsaw lost on the mat Tuesday evening to defending Northern Lakes Conference champion Elkhart Memorial by a score of 45-24, a vast improvement over last year's 63-3 pasting.

For the Tigers, wins were earned by Justin Brooks (103 pounds), Matt Elvidge (135), Adam Keener (140), Andy Keener (145), and Tom Lowe (171), all of whom remain unbeaten on the season. Blake Deaton (160) also got a win, improving to 4-2 on the season.

Two of Warsaw's wins came by fall. Freshman Justin Brooks was taken down by Memorial's Nick Datena at the buzzer ending the first period. Brooks fought back, however, to take an 8-2 lead before scoring a fall at the 5:47 mark.

After racking up a score of 5-0, Andy Keener nailed Cameron Hall in 5:27.

Another noteworthy win came from freshman Andy Keener, who edged senior Kyle Morningstar 3-2.

In an exhibition match, Warsaw sophomore rookie Ben Davis recorded his first win on the mat, pinning his opponent in just 40 seconds.

Coach Tony Boley said, "We have to get better week to week since the competition is only going to get tougher and tougher."

With only one senior starter, Boley is working with a young team. Half the starters against Memorial were freshmen.

"We are working with them on fundamentals," said Boley. "And they are just beginning to learn the level of effort needed to become successful."

Assistant coach Brian Elvidge echoed the sentiment, telling the team, "You need to be tougher in the practice room in order to be tougher on the mat."

Warsaw next travels to Valparaiso for a super-dual invitational at 9 a.m. Saturday. The Tigers' record is now 4-2 overall and 0-1 in the Northern Lakes Conference.
