Warsaw Woman Killed, Man Critical After Friday CrashA Warsaw woman is dead and a Warsaw man is in critical condition after a two-vehicle accident Friday evening.

Nancy E. Barrett, 77, was pronounced dead at the scene by the Kosciusko County Coroner’s Office.

Richard H. Anderson, 85, was airlifted from the scene to a Fort Wayne hospital where he was listed in critical condition late Friday night, according to information provided by the Kosciusko County Sheriff’s Office.

Barrett was the front-seat passenger in Anderson’s vehicle.

The accident occurred at 7:13 p.m. at the intersection of U.S. 30 and CR 325E in Wayne Township, near the Animal Welfare League.

According to the news release, the preliminary results of the investigation, conducted by the KCSO Fatal Team, indicate that a 2007 Ford Fusion, driven by Anderson, was traveling south on CR 325E. As the Fusion crossed the eastbound lanes of U.S. 30, it was hit on the passenger side by the front end of a 2015 Toyota Tacoma, driven by James A. Lewis, 61, of Huntington.

Both vehicles left the southeast side of the intersection following the collision.

Lewis and a front-seat passenger in his vehicle were evaluated at the scene and released. The crash remains under investigation, according to the release.

Jonathan Harney, a resident of Merrywood Mobile Home Park, CR 325E, was driving east on U.S. 30, two vehicles behind the truck.

“All I saw was them collide and one spin,” he said. “I didn’t see any brakes applied either. I didn’t see any brakes or anything.”

Harney said he was driving about 40 mph. The vehicle in front of him called dispatch after the accident, he said.

He said there needs to be a stoplight at the intersection “because there’s too many accidents. There’ve been multiple in the last three years.”

Along with KCSO, responding agencies included the Warsaw Police Department, Pierceton Police Department, Warsaw-Wayne Fire Territory, Winona Lake Fire Territory, Lutheran EMS, Lutheran Air Ambulance and the Kosciusko County Coroner’s Office.
