SOUTH BEND – Warsaw’s boys track and field team certainly saved its best for last Thursday night at South Bend St. Joe High School. And with a regional championship on the line, the Tigers scored their only victory of the meet in the final event, as speedy senior Gabe Furnivall’s anchor leg of the 4x400 led them to a thrilling 77-76 win over the Penn Kingsmen. Furnivall, he with the state championship bloodlines, took the baton with the lead and battled back and forth with Penn senior Tim Deal before pulling away late. Warsaw’s foursome of seniors Chad Goon, Ryan Goon and Furnivall and sophomore Landan Perry shaved four seconds off their best time of the season and won the event in 3:20.56. Penn’s quartet of seniors Christian Wittendorf, Thomas Gales, Zachary Oakley and Deal finished second in 3:21.17. Furnivall’s kick down the backstretch was just enough to give the Tigers their third regional championship in four years. “I knew if the guys gave me the baton with the lead that I’d bring it home, and I did,” said Furnivall, the son of 1982 400-meter state champion Troy Furnivall. “This is what we’ve been working for all year. I told myself to just run my race.” Warsaw coach Matt Thacker called Furnivall the “heart and soul” of the Tigers. “That race shows exactly the kind of competitor Gabe is,” said Thacker. “He does whatever it takes to help the team win. Deal is a great runner, he’s going to Purdue. Gabe showed a lot of heart.” There were 33 schools that scored at least one point in Thursday’s regional, which in previous years has been hosted by Kokomo High School. Mishawaka finished third with 51 points, followed in the top 10 by South Bend Adams (46), Kokomo (38), Western (26), Northridge (24), Wawasee (24), South Bend Washington (22) and Elkhart Memorial 21. Manchester finished 30th with two points, which came from Colin McNeeley’s seventh-place finish in the 200. Triton and Tippecanoe Valley were represented in the meet but did not score any points in the finals. Valley’s evening was highlighted by its 4x100 relay team of Nolan Sponseller, Neil Clampitt, Brandon Murphy and Michael Thacker, who combined to set a new school record of 45.03 seconds. While each school represented had reason to cheer, as there were blistering times in the races and great heights and distances in the field events, the night truly belonged to the Tigers and Kingsmen. And based on the past few years, it shouldn’t have been a surprise it would come down to Warsaw and Penn. The Kingsmen beat the Tigers 83-82 in the 2012 regional, while Warsaw edged Penn 76-73 last year. “We love competing against Penn,” said Thacker. “Penn is a great team and we have a lot of respect for them. We’ve been competing against them all year...the first meet of the season, the Goshen Relays, the Max Truex, and here tonight. If we had to lose, I’d want to lose to them. They’re a class act and a great group of guys.” The top three individuals or teams in each of the 16 events, as well as those that met a standard time, height or distance, advanced to the state meet at Indiana University on June 7. Warsaw will be represented in seven events at the state meet. The 4x800 relay team of Ismael Calderon, Nick Bergen, Daniel Messenger and Tyler Houvener finished second in a time of 8:01.81, cutting 10 seconds off their previous best time. Michael Miller finished third in the 100-meter dash in 10.98 seconds and will be joined in Bloomington by teammate Tristan McClone, who finished fourth in 11.09 seconds but met the state standard. Others advancing from individual events for Warsaw included Ellis Coon in the 1600 (2nd, 4:19.76), Furnivall in the 400 (3rd, 49.77) and Stephen Kolbe in the high jump (3rd, 6-4 3/4). The 4x100 relay team of Tanner Balazs, McClone, Furnivall and Miller finished fourth in 42.76 seconds and got a call from the state and will compete in Bloomington. For Wawasee, Clayton Cook advanced to state after he finished second in the 110 hurdles in 14.98 seconds. Jacob Gilmer finished second for the Warriors in the high jump at 6-4 3/4. The most outstanding performer of the meet was South Bend Adams’ Shaq Vann, who won the 100 in 10.85 seconds, won the 200 in 21.86 seconds and anchored the winning 4x100 relay team, which crossed the line in 42.51 seconds.
