The Warsaw boys golf team braved gusty winds and the threat of storms to host South Bend LaSalle and South Bend Washington Tuesday night in the Tigers' first home meet of the season at Rozella Ford Golf Course.
Warsaw survived the 30-to-50 mph winds to score a 152 and top Washington's 200 and LaSalle's 207.
"This was our first home meet, and we had four guys shoot in the 30s," said Warsaw coach Bob Turner. "And a 152 on this course, that is fairly dry, is very good."
Warsaw's No. 1 golfer Adam Johnson parred seven of nine holes to finish the night with a 37. Then Greg Clay, the No. 3 Tiger golfer, had a 37 as well. Clay was 1-under par going into the final hole, but a triple bogey on nine gave him a 37 on the night. He made par on five holes and birdied two holes in the match.
But Clay was not the only person to have trouble on No. 9. Warsaw's Matt Osbeck was the only Tiger to make par on the hole, and out of 15 varsity players in the match, just three parred the ninth hole.
"Hole nine was tough on us tonight," said Turner. "Greg was 1-under going into nine, and it took him seven strokes to finish the hole. I think we had only one par on that hole all night. In fact, as a team, we were 6-over par just on nine. If we had parred that hole, we would have had a 146. Take away that hole, and we played pretty well.
"I think part of the problem was our concentration. The teams we were playing tonight were taking high numbers, and we ended up playing to our competition. I think we just kind of ran out of gas."
David Slater and Osbeck finished the night with 39s. Slater hit par on three holes and birdied No. 4, while Osbeck parred four holes and birdied No. 6.
Aaron Turner finished the night with a 42.
"We have five solid varsity players," said Turner. "And actually, our sixth varsity player is playing JV, and he shot a 39. That means we had five guys in the 30s. That's pretty good."
Warsaw is 4-2 on the season and will host South Bend Adams and LaVille today at Rozella Ford Golf Course.
"Our schedule makes us stronger in the end," said Turner. "The strength of our scheduling shows up once May rolls around. Earlier in the season, I said we wanted to be ready to go in mid-May, and it looks like that's where we're headed."
