The interdisciplinary team from Warsaw Community High School finished first in the state in the Ameritech Hoosier Academic Super Bowl on Saturday.
The competition took place in the new performing arts center at Pike High School, northwest of Indianapolis.
Championships were awarded after 144 teams competed in six categories: English, math, science, social studies, fine arts and interdisciplinary. Winners were named in four classes based on school enrollment size.
Warsaw's interdisciplinary team finished first in Class 1, the largest enrollment category. Team members are Heather Byrd, Stephanie Campbell, Jeff Ciula, Betsy Lamp, Gillian Morrison and Beth Wallace.
As champions, the Warsaw team received a $300 award from Ameritech for the school library, as well as Olympic-style medals, plaques and banners.
Also earning recognition in the interdisciplinary category was the team from Whitko High School, which finished third in Class 2. Team members are Colleen Crist, Julie Hathaway, Teri McKean, Bryan Rose, Noah Tucker and Stephanie Vance.
A second team from WCHS finished third in Class 1 fine arts. Team members are Morrison, Ciula, Kyle Bruner, Crista Carpenter, Brandi Deskins and Jason Zaugg.
In the Hoosier Academic Super Bowl, student teams race the clock to answer brain-teasing questions. The event, in its 11th year, is designed to showcase the top high school students in Indiana.
The contest began April 14 when more than 1,500 teams from 289 Indiana schools competed at 18 regional sites. The top six teams from across the state advanced to the state finals.
