Warsaw, Wawasee Claim Second At NLC Meet

Posted

DUNLAP - One team and only one team stood in Wawasee's way of winning Saturday's Northern Lakes Conference boys cross country meet.

That team - Northridge - refused to budge.

Northridge finished first with a score of 61, while Wawasee took second with a 63 at Ox Bow Park.

Because Wawasee went 6-0 in regular season dual meets, the Warriors will share the NLC title with Northridge. Regular season meets and the tournament figure into the final NLC rankings.

Four Warriors -ÊRob Chalfant, Jerid Stoffel, Ryan Stichter and Dustan Lytle - finished in the top 11. But Wawasee's fifth runner, George Coquillard, finished 29th.

Northridge's top five runners -ÊKevin Yoder, Ryan Nord, David Young, Brandon Wallace and Ryan Toth - all placed in the top 19.

"Our front four beat Northridge's front four, but our fifth runner was 1:01 behind our fourth runner," Wawasee coach Dave Stookey said. "If we went by the times and scored Northridge and us like a dual meet, we would have won by a score of 28-29.

"Unfortunately, the meet isn't scored that way, and we are still looking for a fifth man."

Goshen's Andrew McKalips won the race with a time of 16:25. Chalfant finished fourth with a time of 16:46, Stoffel ninth with a time of 17:14, Stichter 10th with a time of 17:17, Lytle 11th with a time of 17:22 and Coquillard 29th with a time of 18:23.

Yoder took sixth with a time of 17:02, Nord seventh with a time of 17:03, Young 13th with a time of 17:30, Wallace 16th with a time of 17:43 and Toth 19th with a time of 17:59.

Rounding out the team scores were Goshen with 88, NorthWood with 89, Warsaw with 92, Plymouth with 123 and Concord with 179.

In the girls race, Warsaw entered ranked 18th in the latest coaches' poll, the lone girls team ranked. But Northridge edged the Tigers 45-52 for first place.

Like Wawasee's boys team, Warsaw's top four carried their load, as Jennifer Finch took second (14:58), Rachel Rondeau sixth (15:29), Summer Boyd eighth (15:34) and Hillary Barlow 11th (15:49). But Warsaw's fifth runner, Amy Robertson, finished 25th with a time of 16:49.

The top five Northridge runners - Monica Spangle, Natalie Ewing, Betsy App, Tiffany Brenneman and Rachel Snyder - all placed in the top 17.

Plymouth's Morgan Uceny won the race with a time of 14:29. After Warsaw, Plymouth took third with 73, Goshen fourth with 75, NorthWood fifth with 99, Concord sixth with 176 and Wawasee seventh with 186.

NorthWood, Warsaw and Wawasee compete in Saturday's sectional at Ox Bow Park.
