Warsaw Trucker Calls Cops On Suspicious Cargo

Posted

Danny Carter, a long-haul truck driver from Warsaw, became suspicious of one of the cars he was hauling Thursday that was to be delivered Saturday to Washington, D.C.

Carter told authorities in Idaho he had picked up the car at an unusual location at an unusual time and the person from whom he'd received the shipment acted suspiciously. The car was older and in such poor condition that most people would not pay to have it hauled from Oregon to Washington, D.C. In addition, the shipper appeared very concerned that the shipment reach its East Coast destination on time.

Carter shared his concerns Thursday via telephone with his wife, Wanda. They agreed that he should stop at the next weigh station, which he did at about 2:30 p.m.

A bomb dog from the Boise, Idaho, Airport Police detected some type of explosive substance in one of the packages inside the car.

Police also took into account that Saturday will be the third anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks. As a result, police closed Interstate 84 at 5:54 p.m Thursday.

Investigators using an explosives robot with X-ray capability determined the package did not contain a bomb and I-84 was reopened early Friday morning.

Although the package did not turn out to be explosive, and did not contain anything of interest to law enforcement, officials are pursuing other details of the incident, including information about the person who shipped the vehicle.
