Warsaw Tigers Get Third NLC Win In 5 Days

Posted

After starting 0-1 in the Northern Lakes Conference, Warsaw's baseball team has racked up three NLC wins since Monday.

The latest win was 8-7 over Concord on Friday. Warsaw improves to 7-4 overall and 3-1 in the NLC; Concord falls to 8-6 overall and 1-3 in the NLC.

Earlier this week Warsaw won at NorthWood and Northridge.

"Three wins in the NLC in a week," Warsaw coach Will Shepherd said, "we'll take that."

Warsaw won despite nearly coughing up a 7-2 lead after three innings. The Tigers jumped on Concord senior starter Jeffrey Michael, who threw five wild pitches and lasted just three innings.

In the second inning, Warsaw's Josh Stork and Brooks Stogsdill each scored runs on wild pitches as Warsaw took a 3-2 lead. Nate Milton, who scored Warsaw's third run, advanced to second and third on two wild pitches then scored on fielder's choice to make it 4-2.

The Tigers added three more runs in the third, thanks to two errors by shortstop Ray Mark. Stork reached second when Mark's throw to first base was wide. One out later, Milton reached first on another errant throw to first by Mark. The two errors allowed Geoff Walmer to score to give Warsaw a 5-2 lead. Adam Augustine then drove in Stork and Milton with a two-run double to right field to make it 7-2. Mark left the game at the end of the inning.

After that, Concord just chipped away each inning as Warsaw starter Adam Augustine and reliever Jeff Polding allowed at least one hit every inning. Concord, which finished with 14 hits to Warsaw's eight, scored one run in the fourth then tacked on three more in the sixth to make it 7-6. Warsaw's pitchers were betrayed by a defense that committed four errors.

"Give both teams credit for battling," Shepherd said. "Our pitchers threw strikes, but Concord found holes. They maybe hit two drives to the gap all game. I'm gonna dish out credit to Concord. They didn't quit. They didn't hit balls to the 350 feet sign, but they did what they had to do."

The Minutemen started the sixth with three straight singles to chase the left-handed Augustine, who's hampered with a banged-up left leg. Last Friday Augustine took a line drive off his calf and had to leave in Warsaw's loss to Plymouth. He was effective enough against Concord to get his first win.

"He has some nerve damage," Shepherd said of Augustine, now 1-3. "He's doing what he can. He gutted it out for us. As a senior leader, I wanted to see him battle, see him compete, and he did that."

Warsaw upped its lead to 8-6 in the bottom of the sixth when Polding walked and came around to score after a single by Michael Barger and an error by second baseman Todd Clark, who dropped a pop fly.

While Concord's pitching and defense were suspect, the Minutmen continued to hit. They cut the lead to 8-7 in the top of the seventh and had the bases loaded with one out. Setting up Concord's big inning were a dropped fly ball by center fielder Stogsdill and a booted routine grounder by third baseman Nycz.

But Polding picked up his teammates by getting Bryan Dame to fly out to left then getting Josh Clark to strike out swinging to end the game and leave the bases loaded.

"When we play defense like a champion, we can play with anyone in the state of Indiana. We're not there yet," Shepherd said.
