Warsaw Swimmers Sink Vikings

Posted

A performance coach Terry Aukeman called average was still good enough for his Warsaw boys and girls swim teams to dominate Kosciusko County opponent Tippecanoe Valley Wednesday night.

Aukeman said his team was tired after the recent holiday break, and that the times his teams swam were, "average across the board."

Nonetheless, the host Tigers won both the boys and girls meets by more than 100 points over the Vikings.

"We did alright," said Aukeman, who watched both his boys and girls teams improve to 8-0 on the season. "We were a little tired after Christmas break."

En route to a 142.5-35.5 win over Valley, the Warsaw girls won all 12 events and carded 10 runner-up finishes. The Tigers also swept the top three places in six of the 12 events.

Junior Alexis Hollar won two individual events for Warsaw, taking first in the 50 freestyle with a time of 26.75 seconds and winning the 100 backstroke in a time of 1:06.28.

Hollar also joined Karli Slater, Katy Taylor and Kayla Durcholz in winning the 200 medley relay in a time of 2:04.79. In the final event of the girls meet, Hollar teamed up with Bethany Bayne, Jaylyn Haughee and Tracy Thallemer to win the 400 freestyle relay in a time of 4:03.51, finishing 23 seconds ahead of teammates Ashley Farrar, Allison Finch, Samantha Pierog and Durcholz, who finished second.

Other first-place finishers for the Tigers included Bethany Bayne (200 freestyle), Slater (200 I.M.), Tara Stayer (diving), Katie Marose (100 butterfly), Haughee (100 freestyle), Pierog (500 freestyle), Taylor (100 breaststroke) and the 200 freestyle relay team of Haughee, Taylor, Bayne and Thallemer.

April Halterman (500 freestyle), Jenette Harner (100 backstroke) and Alicia Wright (100 breaststroke) led the Valley girls with runner-up finishes.

On the boys side, the Tigers won all 12 events en route to 144-32 victory over the Vikings.

Warsaw recorded 10 runner-up finishes and swept the top three spots in eight of the 12 events.

Alex VanDuyne had two individual first-place finishes for Warsaw, winning the 200 freestyle and the 500 freestyle events. Nate Taylor, the defending state champion in the 100 breastroke, won the 200 individual medley by a margin of 19 seconds and the breaststroke by a margin of 15 seconds. Kyle Marose also had two individual first-place finishes for Warsaw, winning the 100 butterfly and the 100 backstroke races.

Taylor, VanDuyne and Marose teammed up with Daniel Lowrance to win the 400 freestyle relay by a margin of 15 seconds. VanDuyne, Lowrance, Max Revere and Brian Thallemer were victorius in the 200 freestyle relay.

Other first-place finishers for the Warsaw boys included Lowrance (50 freestyle), Adam Wishart (diving), Revere (100 freestyle) and the 200 medley relay team of Marose, Taylor, Seth Smoker and Lowrance.

Trent Newsome led the Valley boys with a runner-up finish in the 50 freestyle event.

"We did fine," said Aukeman. "I'm happy with how we did."

Aukeman also said it was hard to motivate a team when the opponent doesn't have the numbers to fill the lanes in every event.

Valley's girls team has 12 members, while Warsaw's girls roster lists 26.

Valley's boys team has 11 members, while Warsaw's boys roster lists 24.

Both the Warsaw boys and girls are in action again Saturday at Northern Lakes Conference opponent Concord, while the Valley teams are in action again Tuesday against Three Rivers Conference rival Rochester.
