Warsaw Swimmers Sink Elkhart Memorial

Posted
The Warsaw swimming and diving teams kept their perfect Northern Lakes Conference records in tact Saturday morning at home.

With Elkhart Memorial battling the newly fallen snow to get to Warsaw, the host Tigers weren't too hospitable, with the boys winning 122-63 and the girls taking a 130-55 victory, improving both teams to 4-0 in the NLC. Overall, the Warsaw boys are now 7-0 and the girls improved to 8-1."We swam well," Warsaw coach Terry Aukeman said. "Not amazingly well, but we swam well for this time of year. So, we're looking good going into Christmas break."

The boys got off to a fast start with junior Michael Boyle tallying a score of 273.30 in the diving competition.

"It's definitely his high score by far," Aukeman said. "About 21 points off the school record, so he dove very, very well today. He's been working really hard all year, so we're eager to see how he does down the line."

Boyle's first-place finish was just one of 10 for the Tigers.

In the pool, junior Thomas Wack and junior Mitchell Gauger each won two individual events, with Wack winning the 100 fly and 100 back, while Gauger was the victor in the 50 and 100 free events.

Other individual winners were senior Reid Swanson (200 free) and junior Tyler Arscott (200 IM).

The boys also swept the three relay events, beginning with Gauger, senior Ryan Herman, Wack and junior Harrison Green in the 400 free, then to Green, junior Wesley Craig, sophomore Dominick Cesaretti and Gauger in the 200 free, ending with Swanson, Cesaretti, Craig and Wack in the 400 free.

"It was a nice meet at the end of a long week - with exams and three meets," Aukeman said. "I was real pleased with how we swam."

As well as the boys did, the girls may have done even better following their first loss of the season Thursday at Bremen.

Entering the Memorial meet with a 7-1 record, the Lady Tigers didn't waste much time, winning 10 of the 11 events, only missing out on the 100 breast.

The leaders of the girls were senior Audrey Petro and junior Leah Moore, who each won two individual events and were a part of two winning relays.

Petro got her two wins in the 50 and 100 free events, with Moore taking the 200 IM and 100 fly. Both girls then joined freshman Erica Gauger and sophomore Ava Donovan on the first-place 200 medley relay and junior Julianne Divine and junior Marisa Vogel on the 200 free relay.

Senior Paige Mortakis (meter dive), Vogel (200 free), junior Kayla Hutcherson (500 free) and Gauger (100 back) also won individual events. The final first-place finish for the girls came from sophomore Claire Wack, Vogel, Divine and Hutcherson in the 400 free relay.

"We're getting pretty consistent times out of everybody," Aukeman said. "It's doesn't fluctuate a whole."

That consistency has left the boys and girls teams with stellar records, but Aukeman knows some tough competition approaches after Christmas break in the likes of Northridge and Concord.

"They're usually the top of the class in the conference," Aukeman said. "When we run into them, it will be interesting to see. We always have a nice meet with Wawasee after break. We have some really big meets coming up after the break."

Before re-entering conference competition, Warsaw hosts Tippecanoe Valley on Jan. 6.
