Warsaw Swimmers Sink County Rival Valley

Posted
The 15-day break between meets didn't seem to affect the Warsaw swim teams Wednesday.
Returning from the holiday break with a meet against Tippecanoe Valley, the Warsaw boys won 141-37 and the Lady Tigers took a 144-30 victory.
Between the boys and girls meets, host Warsaw took first place in 30 of the 32 events, 15 for the boys and 15 for the girls.
In the boys' win, freshman Spencer Davidson had the highest point total of the night, winning the 100 free (51.63) and 100 breast (1:03.24), while also joining freshman Jayden Parrett, senior Max Carter and senior Victor Johansson on the winning 200 medley relay (1:49.29), as well as senior Nate Stone, senior Dominick Cesaretti and Parrett on the first-place 200 free relay (1:42.55).
The Lady Tigers had two girls take part in four first-place finishes, as sophomore Cynthia Juarez and junior Erica Gauger each won two individual events and were a part of two winning relays.
The pair began the meet by being a part of the winning 200 medley relay (2:01.41) with sophomore Ashley Van Wormer and senior Claire Wack, then closed the meet as a part of the first-place 400 free relay (4:14.93) with Wack and freshman Jessica Haines.
Individually, Juarez won the 200 IM (2:32.03) and 100 fly (1:08.93), while Gauger placed first in the 100 backstroke (1:08.23) and joined senior Rachel Beery, junior Meghan Boston and Van Wormer on the victorious 200 free relay (1:56.72).
For Valley, sophomore Tommy Alexander took first place in the 500 free (6:15.49) and junior Barbie Kimmel won the diving competition with a score of 147.58.
In all, Warsaw had five different guys win the eight individual events, while the girls had seven girls win eight events.
"We have a lot of outstanding people - both girls and boys," first-year Warsaw coach Nathan Long said.
And it's that team effort Long is looking for this season, as his teams competes in their final Northern Lakes Conference meet Saturday at Concord.
"We have a lot of people to build off of, so we're just trying to get faster," Long said. "The NLC meet (at Concord) is only a week away for the girls, so whatever we can muster out of our girls is what we're trying to do, because it's going to be a battle for first place."
The boys NLC meet will be at Northridge, beginning on Jan. 26, and Long feels his team will do well, but defeating with No. 2 Northridge will be a tall order.
"Our guys should get a solid second place, with Northridge being ranked No. 2 in the state," he said. "It's one of those things where it will be good for our guys to go up against good, state competition."
While Warsaw is at Concord Saturday at 9:15 a.m., Tippecanoe Valley travels to Manchester for a 10 a.m. meet.
