Warsaw’s boys and girls swim teams recorded decisive Northern Lakes Conference wins over Plymouth Tuesday evening, with the Lady Tigers winning 135-50 and the boys earning a 144-38 victory. The Lady Tigers got wins in seven of 12 events. Junior Brenna Morgan won the 200 IM and the 500 freestyle, and freshman Delaney Wihebrink took the 100 backstroke and 100 breaststroke. The boys team won nine of 12 events, and also had a pair of double winners. Senior Ethan Cook won the 100 freestyle and 100 backstroke, and junior Hudson Snyder was first in the 200 IM and the 100 breaststroke. Head coach Anthony DeBrota said he mixed things up, putting swimmers in different events in preparation for Saturday’s meet at Zionsville. “We tried some new events tonight to get us tuned for Zionsville. We looked slower on the blocks tonight than before, but I thought the actual swimming looked good. I just want to see more intensity when they’re tired,” he said. “Still, we had some personal bests, and that’s great to see.” All season long DeBrota has been putting emphasis on the turns, especially in the freestyle events. He also said the ‘stroke’ events (backstroke, breaststroke) needs to work on turns as well. “We’ve got some decent freestyles, and that’s what we’ve been pushing. There’s so many freestyle events, and you gotta have freestylers. Having ‘strokes’ is good, but you gotta have freestylers to win,” he said. “So we’ve really been hitting the freestyle events and the turns. In the strokes we’ve been coming into the wall with a little bit less momentum. We have to remember the harder you go in to a wall, the faster you can come out. “Swimming is all about momentum, and if you’re coming off the wall without a tight streamline, you’re just fighting yourself. I think that we’re going to have to do some reinforcement with the sprint practices for a bit to get the reactions up to par again.” After Saturday’s trip to the Zionsville Invitational, the teams will be off until Jan. 6 when they host Tippecanoe Valley and Huntington North.
