Warsaw Swim Team Sweeps Up Valley

Posted

Although the swim meet between the Warsaw Tigers and the Tippecanoe Valley Vikings ended as expected, the coaches were pleased with their teams' performances Tuesday evening in Warsaw.

In the girls competition, Warsaw topped Tippecanoe Valley by just 14 points, 98-84.

"I am pleased with our performance tonight," said Valley coach Stave Doerscher. "We don't have the depth Warsaw has, and we looked tired on a few swims, but overall we swam pretty well."

"The girls did well tonight," said Warsaw coach Eric Moehler. "I knew Tippy was tougher this year than they have been in the past, so we swam a pretty hard lineup. I am happy with our performance."

Warsaw started the meet with the 200 medley relay team of Katie Beehler, Nikki Albertson, Hillary Barlow and Jaci Thallemer by winning the first event. Then Tippecanoe Valley's Hillary Vanlaningham and Amber Drudge won the 200 freestyle and the 200 individual medley, but the score remained in Warsaw's favor, 28-18.

After Alyssa Anglin and Kyleigh Gast took first and second place in the 100 freestyle, Valley cut Warsaw's lead to eight, 57-49, with five events left to swim. However, Warsaw stayed strong and added to its lead through the final events. In the end Warsaw came out on top, 98-84.

"We won it in the end," said Moehler. "The bottom line is we were able to score. This was a good meet. We won by 14 points, so it was a close meet as well."

"The team swam like I would have expected," said Doerscher. "We won the events we were expected to win, and we got beat in the events I figured we would."

"We had several best times tonight," said Moehler. "To have best times at this point in the year, I am happy to see any best times, and we have several tonight.

"Hillary Barlow had a best time in the 100 butterfly, and Laura Noggle had best times in both the 200 freestyle and the 100 freestyle.

"Overall the girls have worked hard in practice even through Christmas break, and we are looking forward to Wawasee and sectional."

In boys action, Warsaw defeated Valley 134-51. The Tigers jumped out to an early 49-13 lead after just four events as they swept first through third places in the 200 individual medley and the 200 freestyle.

Valley made a comeback by placing first and third in the diving competiton, but it was not enough to overcome the large lead Warsaw had built in the early stages of the meet.

Warsaw placed first in 10 of the 12 events to earn the victory.

Warsaw hits the pool again Saturday morning at Concord while Valley hosts Rochester Tuesday.
