ARGOS - As Warsaw boys soccer coach Scott Bauer put it, his team "survived another typical Warsaw game" Monday in the first round of sectional play at Argos High School.
Bauer, in his second year with the Tigers, was referring to the fact that Warsaw has struggled to finish when it has had numerous opportunities.
In a 2-1 win over Winamac last night, Warsaw outshot the Warriors 25-4.
"I think the team came out ready to play," Bauer said. "They played hard. We had good possessions, our attacking schemes were effective. We had quality shots, good looks, sometimes this game stresses you out, but you still have to put the ball in the net."
The win improves Warsaw's overall record to 7-6-4; Winamac falls to 9-9-3. The Tigers will play Argos, a team they tied earlier in the season, at 6 p.m. Thursday. Argos topped Plymouth 1-0 in Monday's first game, winning 3-1 on penalty kicks after two overtime sessions.
Argos is now 9-6-2 on the season.
Winamac put the first score on the board last night, on its first attempt, when senior Joshua Commons assisted a goal by sophomore Stanley Czech just under six minutes into the game.
Warsaw knotted the score at 1-1 with 7:26 remaining in the first period when junior halfback Tim Zentz assisted senior halfback Ben Minnick.
The teams were tied at halftime, and remained tied until senior forward Peter Lucht scored the game-winning goal with 16:51 remaining in regulation to give the Tigers a 2-1 lead.
"I'm proud of Peter Lucht," Bauer said. "Here's a kid that stays after practice and kicks a 100 free kicks, with his dad being the wall. I said to the guys Peter takes the direct kicks. I was glad that he got rewarded with the winning goal after he put his time in after practice. I'm real proud of him."
