COLUMBIA CITY -ÊThe Warsaw Tigers went to Columbia City to begin the sectional Monday night and came home with a decisive win that ended Peru's season. In a score unusually high for a soccer game, the Warsaw squad defeated Peru, 9-0.
Warsaw started its scoring onslaught with 34:40 left to play in the first half when Tim Zentz assisted Gabe Koser for the first Tiger goal. Less than five minutes later, Warsaw scored again when Matt LaFountain slipped another goal past Peru to put the Tigers up 2-0.
With 23:35 Koser scored his second goal of the evening to give Warsaw a 3-0 lead. Then Tim Zentz scored with 17:07 on the clock to give Warsaw a 4-0 lead at the half.
Warsaw held control of the first half, allowing Peru to move the ball into Warsaw territory just four times. When Peru was there, it was only for short increments of time, the longest being 30 seconds.
Warsaw's dominance in the first half could be summarized by comparing the first-half shots on goal statistics. Warsaw had 18 to Peru's one.
The Tigers continued their offensive attack in the second half. Koser completed a hat trick by scoring his third goal of the night after being assisted by Rudy Ramirez.
Tim Zentz then scored his second unassisted goal of the evening to put Warsaw up 6-0 with more than 27 minutes left in the game.
Less than two minutes later Warsaw scored again as Koser connected with LaFountain for the seventh goal of the evening. Adam Sisson was assisted by Brad Hainley with 11:10 remaining to put Warsaw up 8-0.
Brian Watson scored the final goal of the evening after being assisted by Adam Sisson with 9:20 left in the game. Warsaw defeated Peru 9-0.
"I thought we played better in the second half," said Warsaw coach Scott Bauer. "We played a two touch to force us to move without the ball and work our offense appropriately."
"This game gave us a chance to work on some of the things we needed to work on," said Warsaw assistant coach Ora Freeman. "I have to give Peru credit. They played hard and didn't give up."
Warsaw will play the winner of tonight's Carroll-Huntington North game Wednesday at 8 p.m. in Columbia City. Prior to that game, Wawasee will face Central Noble at 6 p.m.
"We're going to assume it's Carroll," said Bauer. "They are a strong team. We are going to work hard to stay sharp mentally."
