Warsaw Community Schools students will begin the 2012-13 school year on Monday, Aug. 13.
The school board approved the 2012-13 calendar and a preliminary draft of the 2013-14 calendar during Monday night’s regular school board meeting.
The first student day for the 2011-12 school year also was a Monday, Aug. 15.
David Hoffert, WCS chief academics officer, presented the calendars to the board for their approval on behalf of the calendar committee.
In a telephone interview this morning, Hoffert said the committee includes about 25 members, including teachers, administrators, parents, community members and school board members.
“It really is an open door because we want input from all of our stakeholders,” Hoffert said.
To begin the process, the committee looks at the previous school year’s calendar.
“It really is a reflection process,” Hoffert said.
The committee makes sure the calendar matches up with the testing calendar and what is best for the community first.
Hoffert said the 2013-14 calendar approved by the board Monday is a draft. There is other explorations going on, and subcommittees have been formed to look at all possibilities.
The 2012-13 and 2013-14 school calendars were first presented to the board at its public work session Feb. 21.
“The board members are fully informed on the direction we are going,” said Hoffert. “They want what’s best for the community.”
In the 2012-13 school year, the first grading period ends Oct. 12. Fall break will be Oct. 25-26, and Thanksgiving break will be Nov. 22-23.
The second grading period will end Dec. 21, with Christmas break being Dec. 24 through Jan. 4.
The third grading period will end March 15, with spring break scheduled for April 1-5.
Built-in snow make-up days are set for March 29 and April 19. If there are no make-up days, school will be dismissed.
School also will be dismissed Sept. 3 for Labor Day, Jan. 7 for staff records, Jan. 21 for Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Feb. 18 for Presidents Day and May 27 for Memorial Day.
The last student day for the 2012-13 school year is scheduled for May 29, unless days need to be used for a snow make-up days.
Warsaw Community High School graduation is set for June 7, 2013.
In the working draft of the 2013-14 school year calendar, the first student day is scheduled tentatively for Aug. 15, 2013.
First grading period ends Oct. 18, second grading period ends Jan. 10, third grading period ends March 21 and the last student day is June 4.
Labor Day is Sept. 2, 2013, Martin Luther King Jr. Day is Jan. 20, 2014, Presidents Day is Feb. 17, 2014, and Memorial Day is May 26, 2014.
The preliminary calendar also has fall break as Oct. 24-25, 2013; Thanksgiving break Nov. 27-29, 2013; Christmas break as Dec. 23, 2013, through Jan. 3, 2014; and spring break is April 4-11, 2014.
Graduation is tentatively scheduled for the Class of 2014 on June 13, 2014.
