DUNLAP - Warsaw Community High School senior Deon Shafer's dream season continues.
Shafer, the No. 1 singles player for the Tigers' tennis team, advanced to the sweet 16 of the individual state tournament Thursday by beating NorthWood's Preston Swain 6-7 (1-7), 6-3, 6-0 at Concord High School.Shafer is now 22-0 on the season and will compete in the round of 16 at Park Tudor High School in Indianapolis on Oct. 18.
Thursday's clash with Swain was the third time this season Shafer defeated the NorthWood senior.
As a team, Warsaw won the sectional for the fifth-straight season, beating both Churubusco and Wawasee 5-0 last week, but the Tigers were eliminated from the team state tournament Tuesday with a 3-1 loss to eventual regional champion Northridge.
Northridge won the team regional at Concord Wednesday by beating East Noble 3-2.
Shafer is 4-0 in state tournament play this season.
In the Warsaw Sectional, he beat Churubusco's Alex McDowell 6-2, 6-0 and Wawasee's Nathan Brady 6-0, 6-0.
In the team regional at Concord, Shafer defeated Northridge's Jeff George 6-2, 6-1.
And then Thursday, in what was the singles sectional championship of the individual state tournament, Shafer eliminated Swain.
