SYRACUSE - Before Saturday's Wawasee Girls Tennis Sectional, many people considered Warsaw the favorite.
Those people were right. Warsaw defeated Whitko 5-0 in the second round of the sectional, and then defeated Wawasee 5-0 in the championship round to advance to the Northridge Regional. Twelve of Warsaw's 14 wins so far this season have been 5-0 matches.
"Considering the fact that prom [was Saturday] and the kids have so many other things on their minds, I think they did a terrific job of staying focused," said Warsaw coach Joe Beeson. "I think our performance can be attributed to the depth and balance of our team."
After Wawasee defeated Tippecanoe Valley 4-1 to move on to the sectional final, the Warriors took on the Tigers.
Warsaw's No. 2 doubles team of Angie Suchecki and Tracy Yoder combined to defeat Wawasee's Cara Windle and Staci VanLue 6-0, 6-2 in the first match to finish.
Then No. 3 Warsaw singles player Kristi Haddad downed Warrior Candice Brown 6-2, 6-3, and Warsaw's No 2 singles player Lauren Witzky defeated Wawasee's Kayla Auer 6-2, 6-2.
No. 1 doubles team Kara Kesler and Amber Barrett got Warsaw's fourth point of the match by topping Margo Searfoss and Ashley Ganz 6-4, 6-1.
In the longest match of the afternoon, Warsaw's Jessica Davis and Wawasee's Kate Murphy faced off at the No. 1 singles position in their third meeting of the season. In both regular-season matches, Murphy and Davis battled to three sets, but the sectional match was different.
Murphy jumped out to a 3-0 lead and looked to be on her way to a victory. However, Davis got herself back in the match, chipping away at Murphy's lead until the score was 5-4. Davis captured the last two games in the match to win the first set 6-4.
In the second set, Davis scored first, but then she and Murphy traded points until the score was 3-2 in Warsaw's favor. Then Davis kicked into overdrive and scored the last three points of the match to win the set 6-2 and give Warsaw a 5-0 team victory.
"Jessica played Kate twice already this year, and both of those matches went into three sets," said Beeson. "Today Jessica was down 4-1 in the first set and fought back to get the win. Then she got the win in two sets."
"This was the first time that match didn't go into three sets," said Wawasee coach Phil Mishler. "Jessica seems to take a couple games to get started, but then she really warms up and sticks with her gameplan. There at the end she was really painting the lines and hitting some nice shots."
In order to get to the sectional final, Wawasee defeated Tippecanoe Valley 4-1, and Warsaw downed Whitko 5-0.
Tippecanoe Valley's point came at the No. 1 doubles slot wherer Kris Sanders and Kyleigh Gast teamed up to defeat Margo Searfoss and Ashley Ganz 6-1, 6-2. The Viking duo, which is now 18-1 on the season, advanced to the individual regional at Northridge as well.
Warsaw will play Fairfield Tuesday in Middlebury at the Northridge Regional.

Warsaw's Postseason Success Lies With Hitters
By Jeff Holsinger, Times-Union Sports Writer
Warsaw's softball team is not favored to win its softball sectional.
Based on recent history, this is the best news Warsaw coach Craig Helfrich could ask for.
Two years ago, the Tigers had one senior on its roster and won their sectional when they weren't favored. Last year 21-10 Warsaw coughed up a 2-0 loss to 10-18 Elkhart Central in the sectional championship.
Warsaw enters the sectional with a 17-9 record and gets to play on its home field, but the Tigers aren't the team to beat.
"The team to beat is Elkhart Memorial," Helfrich said. "They're ranked. They have the best record."
Elkhart Memorial is 22-5 and ranked 10th in the 3A poll. Warsaw played at Elkhart Memorial on April 30 and lost 7-0 as the Tigers committed six errors that led to five unearned runs. The six errors were uncharacteristic as Warsaw has been a sound defensive team.
"When we played them before, we made six errors and gave it to them," Helfrich said. "Memorial is a pretty good hitting team. Their pitching is not overpowering."
That's good news for Warsaw. As has been the case the last several years for the Tigers, how far they go depends on how well they hit. Last year the Tigers won sectional games 1-0 and 2-0 before losing to Elkhart Central 2-0.
The pitchers who threw those games are back this year. Starting pitchers Ashley Wyatt (9-3) and Michelle Liebsch (8-6) again lead the Tigers.
"We have the pitching and defense," Helfrich said. "We could easily be 23-3 had we scored just two or three runs in some of our games this season. All we have to do is score two or three runs in the sectional."
Helfrich thinks Warsaw is peaking at the right time. Warsaw won at 22-1 Columbia City 4-2 in 17 innings on Thursday then hosted and beat Tippecanoe Valley 9-1 on Saturday. Valley set a school record this year with 13 wins.
"The Columbia City win was huge for us," Helfrich said. "What we did against Valley and Columbia City was manufacture runs. We bunted people over and got key hits.
"In the sectional, we have to score early and put pressure on the other team. The longer a game goes 0-0, anything can happen."
And pressure is something Helfrich claims his team doesn't have to deal with, despite having four key senior starters in center fielder Christine Kurosky, shortstop Amie Poling, third baseman Jacquie Burns and Liebsch.
"No, our team doesn't any feel pressure," Helfrich said. "No one is saying Warsaw will win this. Everyone is saying Memorial will win it."

ML Motorsports Returns To Third
By Dale Hubler, Times-Union Sports Writer
CONCORD, N.C. - Scott Eldridge, crew chief for the Warsaw-based ML Motorsports ARCA RE/MAX Series team, called Saturday's EasyCare 100 at Lowe's Motor Speedway the first of three consecutive important races.
In front of an estimated crowd of 100,000 people, 25-year-old driver Jason Jarrett drove the No. 67 Mary Louise Miller-owned Pontiac to a seventh-place finish, bumping the team back to third place in the season points standings.
Races in Kansas and Michigan will also go a long way towards the season points standings, Eldridge said.
Jarrett, who qualified 10th, drove to a seventh-place finish Saturday despite not having the car or the motor Eldridge had planned on running.
"I knew when we came down here we didn't bring the car or the motor we wanted to," Eldridge said. "A lot of guys bring qualifying motors with them. We tried to build one, we just didn't get it done."
The race - 67 laps for 100 miles - was described as a sprint, and Jeffersonville driver Frank Kimmel made quick work of the 38-car field.
The defending series champion, who qualified seventh, took the lead from polesitter Tim Steele on lap 22 and led the final 45 laps to pick up his fourth consecutive win.
"I'd like to see ARCA go to a longer race down here," Eldridge said. "Everytime we come down here we look like the local street stock show. The race was live on TV with standing-room only and we looked like idiots."
Kentucky's Stuart Kirby came in second, followed by Steele, Stanton Barrett, David Keith and Darrel Lanigan. Jarrett's seventh-place finishing Pontiac was the first non-Ford to cross the line.
"I think we had a respectable finish," Jarrett said. "The car wasn't handling the best at first, but it felt better later in the race. I felt like we had just as good a car as I did in the fall race here last year."
Jarrett, racing the NASCAR Busch Series at the time, made his ARCA debut at Lowe's Motor Speedway last year, qualifying third and finishing fourth.
Jarrett's seventh-place finish came in a race dominated by two things - Kimmel and crashes.
The first caution came on lap two when former Atlanta Falcons coach Jerry Glanville made contact with Kerry Earnhardt just ahead of Jarrett.
On lap 10, a crash in Turn 4 collected a large portion of the field, forcing Jarrett to stay high to get through the debris.
"To come out of a race like this with four tires and fenders, I'd say we did OK," Eldridge said.
Thirty-eight cars started the race, and 17 were running when Kimmel took the checkered flag. Only nine of those cars were on the lead lap.
The next race on the ARCA RE/MAX Series schedule is June 2 at Kansas Speedway, followed by Michigan International Speedway on June 9.

Warsaw Wins NLC Golf Title
High School Roundup
By Staff Report, Times-Union
PLYMOUTH -ÊThe boys golf teams from the Northern Lakes Conference converged on Plymouth Country Club Saturday for the NLC Tournament. Goshen won the match with a team score of 311, while Warsaw was second with 314 and Wawasee was third with 315. Northwood finished fifth overall with a 336.
Wawasee's Joel Bickel was the medalist of the match with a 76. He tied for first with Warsaw's Adam Johnson, but Bickel won a one-hole playoff to earn medalist honors in the tournament.
Stephen Conrad and Justin Rider finished the day with 79s for Wawasee, while Josh Abrams had an 81, and Kyle Lundy had an 85.
"Joel did a great job winning the individual title," said Wawasee coach Steve Coverstone. "Stephen and Justin had a difficult front nine, but came on strong on the back side."
Warsaw's Matt Osbeck and Greg Clay followed Johnson with 78s, while David Slater had an 82 and Aaron Turner had an 84.
Warsaw was the overall NLC season champion, while Goshen was second and third was Wawasee.
"We missed winning the overall conference by one shot," said Coverstone. "Our last four guys made bogeys on the 18th hole. Had we gotten two pars coming in, that would have done it. We shot 152 on the backside but couldn't overcome our poor start. Now we'll just try to get ready for sectional."
Adam Leeper led NorthWood with a 79.
Wawasee's Bickel, Conrad and Rider, and Warsaw's Johnson and Turner were named to the All-Conference First Team. Tiger Greg Clay and Panthers Eric Reynolds and Nick Abel were on the Honorable Mention squad.

The Whitko Wildcats improved to 3-1-1 in the Three Rivers Conference after defeating Tippecanoe Valley 10-0 Saturday. It was a continuation of a game that started Monday but was called due to rain.

Alan Robbins pitched a one-hitter for the Wildcats and helped his own cause by hitting two doubles.
Valley's lone hit came from Jeremiah Haney.
