Warsaw Police Chief Steve Foster and Mayor Ernie Wiggins presented Mike Monesmith, Pierceton, with an appreciation award Friday at the Board of Public Works and Safety meeting.

At 6:30 p.m. May 2, Monesmith, traveling northbound on South Buffalo Street saw a red garden tractor go over a curb without a driver. The driver, Russell Dean Kistler, 67, of 901 South Buffalo St., Warsaw, had fallen off his lawn mower.

Monesmith waved down Sgt. Doug Brumfield, Warsaw Police Department. Brumfield radioed for two paramedic ambulances and Warsaw Fire Department Rescue. Kistler's airway was cleared and CPR began, while Monesmith used a CPR mask for ventilation. Kistler took several deep gasps of air during CPR, but died shortly after. Kistler was mowing his yard when he suffered a heart attack and fell off his mower.

Monesmith's attempts to save Kistler's life were recognized Friday.

Wiggins said the city "certainly felt that it (Monesmith's efforts in saving a life) was worthy of recognition and we've asked him to come here today (to the Board of Works meeting)."

"We put together a police department citizens award appreciation presented to you (Monesmith)," Foster said.

"We would like to formally recognize you for your efforts," Wiggins said.
