Warsaw Relay Team Snatches Sectional Championship

Posted

"Everybody wants to be a sectional champion," said Warsaw girls track coach Paul Boyd.

While his Tiger team did not win the sectional at Fisher Field Tuesday eveing, the 1600 relay team did earn its place in the spotlight as the sectional champion.

And the foursome was not even running in their usual order.

"We changed the lineup a bit tonight," said Boyd. "It was Rachel Rondeau's first time as the lead-off person. Then Chelsea (Boyd) ran a very fast second leg. When Ashley Kitchens got the baton, she made up about 10 meters in the last 80 meters of the third leg. She tore it up."

But the Tiger runner who "tore it up" the most was junior Claire Beckett.

Running the anchor leg of the 1600 relay, Beckett trailed Northridge's Tiffany Brenneman through the first three turns of the final lap.

However, Beckett's energy kicked in on the final turn and she passed Brenneman just after the final turn. Beckett then finished the race in 4:09.00, six-tenths of a second ahead of the Northridge runner, to give Warsaw its only first place finish of the night.

"This is the first big (1600 relay) we have won this season," said Paul Boyd. "Northridge beat us twice earlier in the season, but this time we got them."

While the 1600 relay team was the only Warsaw sectional champion, the other Warsaw relay teams did not do too shabby. Both the 400 relay team of Beckett, Kitchens, Jessica Garcia and Cheyenne Runnells and the 3200 relay team of Kitchens, Rondeau, Chelsea Boyd and Jennifer Finch advanced to next week's regional by placing in the top four at the sectional.

Wawasee's 3200 relay team of Brittany Winchester, Shannon Mumma, Jessica Lundgren and Cecilia Shoemaker placed fifth in the sectional, but earned a spot at the regional after Northridge decided to scratch its fourth-place time.

Warsaw also had three runners advance to the regional in individual events. Beckett placed second in the 200 with a time of 27.20, while Jennifer Finch ran the 3200 in 12:28.54 to earn a third-place finish. Rachel Rondeau's 2:29.60 in the 800 was good enough for fourth place.

"We moved a large number of runners on to the next level," said Boyd. "That's what you want to do at the sectional. We're still racing, and that's good."

Winchester was Wawasee's only individual to advance to the regional competition. She was second in the 800 with a time of 2:24.27.

"We did not run as well as we did at the conference meet last week, but Brittany Winchester is moving on in the 800 after placing second," said Wawasee coach Kevin Gilbert.

Northridge won the team sectional with 124 points, while Elkhart Memorial was second with 86 points and Elkhart Central was third with 72 points.

Warsaw finished sixth overall with 58.5 points, and Wawasee earned the ninth spot with 17 team points.

The individuals and relay teams that advanced from the sectional will travel to the Bremen Regional Tuesday.

Local Girls Advance From Valley Sectional

By Dale Hubler, Times-Union Sports Writer

AKRON - There's a reason why coaches like to call this part of the season "survive and advance."

While girls track teams from Triton, Tippecanoe Valley, Manchester and Whitko didn't walk away with the trophy at Tuesday night's Valley Sectional, a number of the athletes lived to fight another day.

With the top four teams or individuals in each event advancing to Tuesday's Bremen Regional, Valley will be represented in eight of 15 events, while Triton and Manchester advanced in seven and Whitko two.

"We ran well, maybe not the best times of the season, but we have some kids moving on," Valley co-head coach Jeff Shriver said. "We're pleased, we have a number of kids that got out. Now hopefully we can get some to move on to the next level."

Plymouth ran away with the team competition, racking up six first-place efforts en route to scoring 120 points. Triton came in second with 85 points, followed by Culver Girls Academy (82.5), Manchester (79.66), Valley (62), Oregon-Davis 56.5, Northfield (43), Whitko (25), Rochester (13), Caston (13) and Culver Community (3.33).

For Triton, Terrin Meister, Ashli Senff, Kylie Kreft and Carly Feldman advanced in two individual events each.

Meister took first in the 100 hurdles and second in the 300 hurdles, while Senff took seconds in the high jump and long jump and Carly Feldman was second in the discus and third in the shot put. Kreft ran to fourth-place finishes in both hurdles events.

Amber Feldman took Triton's only other first-place finish, winning the discus with a throw of 117-8.

The Trojans will also be represented in the 1600 relay by Carrie Kauffman, Carly Feldman, Meister and Senff after the foursome took third.

For the host Vikings, Laura Lash led the way, advancing by finishing second in the 1600 and third in the 3200. Heather Rathbun (200), Kara Kramer (400) and Kara Anderson (high jump) also moved to the regional by placing in the top four. Valley also moved on in the 400, 1600 and 3200 relay events.

"This was a great sectional for us," Shriver said. "This was the third year in a row we won our conference, and we're excited about that. We're ready for the regional."

For Manchester, Ann Harms and Lydia Flora advanced in two individual events each, with Harms taking first in the 300 hurdles and second in the 100 hurdles. Flora won the 1600, and then finished second in the 3200. Ashley Penrod finished fourth in the shot put to advance, while the Squires also moved on in the 400 and 1600 relay events.

Only Angie Juricak moved on individually for Whitko, taking fourth in the 800. The Wildcats' foursome of Lisa Wilkinson, Trista Mathias, Angel Puckett and Juricak advanced by finishing third in the 3200 relay.
