Research will continue into using the Gatke property for a small business incubator in Warsaw.
That is what the Warsaw Redevelopment Commission voted in support of at its meeting Monday.
Commission member Kyle Babcock suggested at a previous meeting Aug. 14 that the area be used for developing a small business incubator.
He said he, Mayor Ernie Wiggins and City Planner Jeremy Skinner have toured the property by McKinley and Durbin streets in Warsaw since the August meeting.
Babcock said Muncie and Indianapolis have business incubators, and he has been researching Web sites of the Association of Small Business Owners.
He suggested a structural engineer look at the building to determine how the building could be used for a small business incubator.
"I think we should use the area for small businesses because it would be a service to the community and help owners to find an affordable space in Warsaw," Babcock said.
Skinner said the area has been cleared for commercial and business uses.
He said he has received phone calls of business owners expressing initial interest in using the building to locate their business, but they have not committed to moving their business to the location.
Skinner suggested working with Kosciusko Development Inc. and the Chamber of Commerce on plans for using the property.
"Placing a sign at the property would let business owners know the space is on the market," Skinner said.
The commission also approved four claims, including a claim for CR 300N and Ind. 15N intersection improvements for $1,000; $2,500 for a tax increment replacement levy and tax increment revenue estimates; and two claim payments of $4,840.69 and $1,273.24.
Redevelopment members are Savina Kralis, Charlie Smith, Tammy Rockey, Neal Carlson and Kyle Babcock.
The commission will meet again Oct. 2 at noon at city hall.
