Republican Ernie Wiggins was elected to a second term as mayor of Warsaw Tuesday, garnering 67.41 percent of the vote over Independent candidate Jerry Opperud's 32.59 percent of the votes.

Wiggins received 995 votes and Opperud 481 out of a possible total of 7,915 registered voters. About 19 percent of the voters in Warsaw turned out for this municipal election.

In the city council at-large race, Republicans Joe Thallemer, the incumbent, and Bob Morrison will take the two seats in January. Thallemer received 43.48 percent of the vote (1,084 votes) and Morrison received 42.88 percent (1,069 votes). They were challenged by Libertarian Daniel Stevens, who received 13.64 percent of the vote (340).

Other elected officials, all Republicans, received 100 percent of the votes: for clerk, Elaine Call, 1,287 votes; District 1's Jeff Grose, 344 votes; District 2's Charlie Smith, 165 votes; District 3's George Clemens, 306 votes; District 4's Jerry Patterson, 182 votes; and District 5's Bill Rhoades, 296 votes.

"I'd like to thank all the people who turned out to vote," Wiggins said Tuesday evening. "I appreciate the confidence and trust shown in me. I'd also like to thank the campaign committee for their help during the primary election as well as during the general election. I couldn't have done it without them.

"I'm looking forward to another four years of working with the city council and continuing to make Warsaw a wonderful place to live."
