Warsaw Netters Swat Valley 5-0

Posted

In terms of the highway known as high school girls tennis, Tippecanoe Valley was just another speed bump in Warsaw's way Tuesday.

The Tigers hosted their county rivals and beat them 5-0 on the varsity level and 5-0 on the junior varsity level.

"They came out ready to play," Tippecanoe Valley coach Jack Shambaugh said of Warsaw. "They're a typical Warsaw team, they get a lot of practice in the off-season."

The win improved Warsaw to 5-1, while the Vikings fall to 2-2 on the season.

Excluding the LaPorte Invitational, all of Warsaw's wins have been by a 5-0 score.

"We have strength all through the lineup. We don't have a weak link," Warsaw coach Joe Beeson said.

A year ago, Valley hosted and topped the Tigers 3-2, but with the graduation of Valley's three singles players, Warsaw dominated at every position Tuesday.

"Our girls competed, but you don't replace that," Shambaugh said of graduating his singles players.

Tiger freshman Jessica Davis picked up the win at No. 1 singles, defeating Alyssa Anglin 6-2, 6-3. Sophomore Lauren Witzky won at No. 2, besting junior Julie Studebaker 6-1, 6-0. At the last singles position, Warsaw freshman Kristi Haddad topped Viking sophomore Kelly Sanders 6-4, 6-1.

"We have two freshman and a sophomore playing the three singles positions," Beeson said. "We're not talking about building for another year, we're talking about this year."

Warsaw graduated just one player from last year's team, No. 1 singles player Abbie Simmons.

In the closest match of the afternoon, Warsaw's No. 1 doubles team of seniors Kara Kesler and Amber Barrett topped seniors Kris Sanders and Kyleigh Gast 6-3, 6-4. At No. 2 doubles, Warsaw's Angie Suchecki and Tracy Yoder topped seniors Jamie Doud and Jayme McCalla 6-1, 6-1.

Tuesday's match was scheduled for Monday, but it was played last night because of rain. The Tigers will play Northern Lakes Conference rivals Wawasee Thursday and Plymouth Friday. Both matches will be on the road.

"We have two conference matches yet this week," Beeson said. "That's where our focus is right now."

Valley plays at Glenn today.
