Warsaw Man Faces Neglect Charge

Posted
A Warsaw man is behind bars this morning after he reportedly neglected an adult relative he was supposed to be caring for.

Mylin L. Cumberland, 60, of Harrison Street, Warsaw, was arrested and booked into the Kosciusko County Jail at 9:29 p.m. Tuesday for one count of neglect of a dependent. His bond was set at $2,000.

According to the Warsaw Police Department, a 56-year-old woman was found wandering near the Owen's East parking lot on Jan. 3. She was dirty, disoriented and not dressed for the cold weather. She was taken to her home, and officials learned that she has lived like a recluse in one bedroom of the home for about 10 years. When detectives and Indiana Adult Protective Service investigators entered the bedroom, they discovered unsanitary and unhealthy conditions. The room was filled to the ceiling with human waste, garbage, old clothing, opened and unopened food packages and hygiene products.

Cumberland reportedly had not seen the woman for two years, even though they lived in the same home.

The woman was not confined in the home, but she was a recluse in the home.

Police say that Cumberland was aware of the woman's diminished mental state, but still failed to provide for her well-being with support and medical needs.

The woman was treated at Kosciusko Community Hospital and the Bowen Center in the days following the Jan. 3 incident. Besides hygiene issues, medical personnel and psychological caregivers noted both physical and mental issues.

The woman currently is not living in the home and is receiving nursing care.
