Warsaw Man Faces Domestic Battery ChargesA Warsaw man faces domestic battery charges after allegedly hitting a woman and causing her to fear what he might do next.

Jay Wesley Hicks, 46, of 909 Walkers Ridge, Warsaw, was booked into the Kosciusko County Jail at 9:29 p.m. Sunday for domestic battery.

Court documents filed Monday list the charges against him as domestic battery with a child under 16 present, a level 6 felony; and domestic battery, a Class A misdemeanor.

His bond was set for $10,000 surety and $250 cash.

On Sunday, Warsaw Police Officer Clay Layne conducted a welfare check on a woman. The woman opened the door and was visibly upset, according to court documents.

Layne could see Hicks in a chair. Hicks wanted to know why Layne was there and who called him, and said that the woman did not want to speak with him.

Layne had the woman walk outside with him to speak. She told him that Hicks hit her, and Layne could see a large red mark on the right side of her face and cheek. She said Hicks threw her purse and some boxes and hit her in the face. He also pulled her hair.

She said she was scared because if Hicks was arrested he would be out of jail in two days, and she feared what would happen to her.

The woman said a child was present and saw the battery occur.

While Layne was speaking with the woman, Hicks opened the door and told Layne: “You can go now,” court documents state.

Layne arrested Hicks for domestic battery in the presence of a child.

A temporary protective order was granted until the court can conduct a hearing at 11 a.m. April 22.
