Warsaw Man Faces Charges Of Battery On Law Enforcement

Posted
A Warsaw man was arrested after allegedly taking a Taser from an officer and using it against him during a struggle.

Lucas Logan Cook, 28, of 1508 Tippecanoe Drive, Apt. A1,  was arrested and booked into the Kosciusko County Jail at 4:51 p.m. Friday for battery on law enforcement. His preliminary bond was set at $21,000.

A probable cause affidavit filed Feb. 19 lists the charges against him as two counts of battery causing bodily injury to a law enforcement officer, level 5 felonies; and disarming a law enforcement officer, a level 5 felony.

On Feb. 3, Warsaw Police officer Jacob D. Metzger responded to a 911 call from Cook, who had told the dispatcher that they were the probably the last person he would ever talk to.

When officers arrived at Cook’s apartment, he walked outside the residence and said he had contacted the FBI and wanted officers to know that he was an abducted child from California and was worth a lot of money.

Court paperwork said Metzger had prior knowledge of Cook not taking his medication for schizophrenia.

Cook then attempted to leave and Metzger told him he was not free to leave because of his mental state.

Cook went through a doorway  and attempted to close the door, closing it on Metzger’s arms. Metzger forced the door open and Warsaw  officer Clay Layne attempted to gain control of Cook, who was resisting.

Layne used his Taser, but it had no effect on Cook. Layne then used another Taser cartridge and Cook grabbed the Taser while it was dispersing a five-second shock and shoved the Taser against Layne’s leg, causing Layne to receive a shock.

Cook then hit Metzger in the forehead, knocking his glasses off, and took control of Layne’s Taser. Metzger was able to subdue Cook and officers were able to retrieve the Taser.

Cook was taken to Kosciusko Community Hospital where they completed a 72-hour emergency detention at the Bowen Center.

On Feb. 19, Kosciusko County Superior Court III Judge Joe Sutton ordered that the county clerk issue a warrant for Cook’s arrest with a surety bond set for $20,000 and a cash bond of $1,000.
