A Warsaw man was arrested Thursday after allegedly choking a woman while trying to take her cellphone.
Spenser Wayne Shoemaker, 28, of 202 S. Sherman St., Warsaw, was booked into the Kosciusko County Jail at 7:43 a.m. Thursday for strangulation.
In addition to the level 6 felony charge of strangulation, court documents filed Oct. 23 list charges against him as domestic battery with a child under 16 present, a level 6 felony, and domestic battery, a Class A misdemeanor.
His bond was set at $5,000 surety and $750 cash.
On Oct. 18, Kosciusko County Sheriff’s Department deputy Mike Fowler responded to a domestic abuse complaint at 243 N. Bobber Lane, Warsaw. He spoke with the victim, who said she and Shoemaker were discussing text messages on her cellphone when he became angry. She said Shoemaker came up behind her and put his arm around her neck, choking her while he was trying to get her cellphone out of her pocket.
The victim said Shoemaker lifted her off the floor and choked her to the point she couldn’t breathe and she thought she was going to pass out.
Fowler saw red marks on the victim’s neck.
A witness told Fowler that he and his wife were downstairs when they heard a loud noise upstairs, which caused him to go upstairs. While the male witness was in the stairway, Shoemaker came down the stairs and left the residence.
Present in the home during the incident was a child under 16, according to court documents.
