Warsaw Man Faces Charges After Alleged StrangulationA Warsaw man was arrested last week after allegedly strangling a woman in front of her child.

John F. Gardner, 37, of 322 Rattington Circle, Warsaw, was arrested and booked into the Kosciusko County Jail Aug. 20 for domestic battery in the presence of a child under 16 and strangulation. His preliminary bond was set at $5,250.

Court documents filed Friday list the charges against him as strangulation, a level 6 felony; domestic battery with a child under 16 present, a level 6 felony; and domestic battery, a Class A misdemeanor.

On Aug. 20, Warsaw Police officer Phillip Reed responded to a domestic abuse complaint at Gardner’s address and talked with the victim. She said Gardner became frustrated and put both of his hands around her neck, impeding her ability to breathe. Marks were visible on both sides of the victim’s neck.

Reed spoke with the victim’s son who said he saw Gardner put both hands around his mother’s neck and push her down on the couch.

When Reed told Gardner that the victim said he put both hands around her neck and pinned her down to the couch, Gardner said, “OK.” When Reed told Gardner the victim said he choked her to the point she couldn’t breathe, Gardner once again said, “OK.”

Gardner’s initial hearing date is scheduled for 1 p.m. Sept. 13 in Kosciusko County Superior Court III.
