Warsaw Man Faces Battery, Strangulation ChargesA Warsaw man was arrested recently after allegedly choking a roommate and breaking her nose.
Charles Cornelius Cotton Jr., 31, of 212 N. Cook St., Warsaw, was booked into the Kosciusko County Jail at 2:03 p.m. Jan. 24 on preliminary charges of strangulation and interfering in the reporting of a crime.
Court documents filed Tuesday list the charges against him as battery causing serious bodily injury, a level 5 felony, and strangulation, a level 6 felony.
He’s since been released on a $5,000 surety bond and $250 cash bond. His initial hearing is scheduled for 1 p.m. Feb. 14 in Kosciusko County Superior Court III.
On Jan. 24, Warsaw Police officer J.E. Roberts was dispatched to a report of a battery. He was told the victim was at Kosciusko Community Hospital for her injuries. Upon arrival to the scene where the battery took place, he spoke with Cotton, who said there was an argument between him and his two roommates, one of whom was the victim. Roberts saw a cut on the back of Cotton’s head, and he said he was hit in the back of the head during the argument.
Roberts spoke with a woman who has a child with Cotton. She said that an argument occurred between Cotton and the victim. During the argument, Cotton hit the victim in the face, causing her to bleed, according to court documents. He also used his hands to apply pressure to the victim’s neck. The woman said she picked up a glass dish and hit Cotton in the back of the head to help the victim. The victim and the other female roommate then went to KCH.
At KCH, Roberts spoke with the victim and saw she had injuries to her face and neck. She said that she and Cotton had an argument and that during it Cotton choked her. The victim said he hit her in the face.
It was later determined that the victim suffered a fractured nose from the altercation.
The other female roommate was interviewed at KCH and she provided the same description of the battery as the other two women.
Roberts then returned to the residence and arrested Cotton. While he was transporting Cotton, Cotton admitted that there was an altercation between him and the victim and that he choked her, according to court documents.
