Warsaw Man Faces Battery Charges After Strangulation IncidentA Warsaw man was arrested on battery charges Sunday after allegedly hitting a woman for sleeping on the couch and then keeping her from calling for help.

Ryan Ray Jarrell, 31, of 1310 E. Clark St., Warsaw, was arrested and booked into the Kosciusko County Jail at 8:41 a.m. Sunday for domestic battery with a preliminary bond of $5,250.

Court documents filed Monday list the charges against him as strangulation, a level 6 felony; domestic battery with moderate bodily injury, a level 6 felony; and interference with the reporting of a crime, a Class A misdemeanor.

On Sunday, Warsaw Police Department officers Chuck Hodges, Wayne Wilkie and Greg Oberlin responded to a 911 domestic call at Jarrell’s address. Upon arrival, the officers talked with the victim who said that while she was sleeping on the couch, Jarrell hit her in the face. The officers saw swelling and redness around the victim’s right eye. She said Jarrell was angry because she spent the night on the couch.

The victim said she attempted to call 911, but Jarrell took the phone from her. She said she then attempted to yell, hoping the dispatcher would hear her and send someone.

Allegedly, Jarrell pushed the victim down on the hardwood floor, causing a visible bruise on her knee. While she was laying on the floor, Jarrell got on top of her and used his forearm to push on her neck, making it difficult for the victim to breathe. As a result of Jarrell using his forearm on her neck, she experienced pain, according to the court documents, as well as pain from the bruise on her knee.

Central Dispatch said when it received the 911 call, a man said it was a misdial and everything was OK. Dispatch could hear a woman’s voice in the background hollering for help.

While Jarrell was being processed into the KCJ, an officer found Jarrell had two kinds of pills in his possession – oxycodone and alprazolam.
