Warsaw Looks At Changing Class Times

Warsaw's school board will hold a public meeting Monday to discuss block scheduling at Warsaw Community High School. The meeting is scheduled for 7 p.m. in the large lecture room at the high school.

Superintendent Dr. Lee Harman said block scheduling, which has been studied by the administration and some high school faculty members for more than a year, involves longer classes and fewer per day. For example, he said, the most common model is four 90-minute classes one day, with three classes and a resource period the next day.

"When you talk about life skills and the work that we do every day, we don't have a bell that goes off every 45 minutes," he said.

The informational session Monday will look at why block scheduling is being considered, various formats, advantages and disadvantages, and experiences at other school corporations, such as Tippecanoe Valley, that are using it.

Harman said the meeting also will tackle the issue of school size and how to personalize the high school experience.

"Because of the size, we don't want kids to feel lost, to feel anonymous," he said.
