Warsaw Leads Roundup By Winning Homestead Invitational

FORT WAYNE — The Warsaw boys golf team claimed Saturday’s Homestead Invitational title at Orchard Ridge Country Club in Fort Wayne.
Shooting a 322 on the par-71 course, Warsaw defeated the likes of East Noble (329), Culver Military Academy (333), Northridge (338) and Homestead, rounding out the top five.
Wawasee was just outside the top five, finishing sixth with a 339.
East Noble’s Michael Sharp was the top golfer of the day, shooting a one-under 70, followed by Warsaw’s Tim Ahlersmeyer, who shot a 75, Northridge’s Will Erekson (75) and Wawasee’s Luke Jackson (76).
Other Warsaw scores were 80s from Jon Schram and Jonny Hollar and 87s out of Ryan Cultice and Brandon Eckert.
For Wawasee, Jackson’s score was followed by Tristen Atwood’s 84, Jeffrey Moore’s 88, Dylan Cousins’ 91 and Mason Germonprez’s 98.
Wawasee hosts Penn and LaVille today at the Tippecanoe Lake Country Club then welcomes in Warsaw Tuesday at South Shore Golf Club in Syracuse.

Saturday in Wabash
Heritage Christian won Saturday’s Norse Golf Invitational at Honeywell Golf Course in Wabash, hosted by Northfield. On the par-71 course, Heritage Christian finished with a 320, while Whitko was eighth with a 353 and Manchester was 11th, shooting a 390. Heritage Christian’s Sam Hall was the medalist with a 75 and Whitko’s Daniel Zawlocki tied for second with a 75. Whitko and Manchester are both in TRC action Tuesday, as Whitko is at Tippecanoe Valley and Manchester travels to Wabash.

After losing the first game of a doubleheader with Bremen 3-2 Saturday, the host Warsaw Tigers won the second 11-1 in five innings. In the opener, Tyler Lafollette went 2 for 4 with a double. Following a break, the Tigers were more offensive in the second game, as Lafollette was 4 for 4 and Josh Frantz was 3 for 4, scoring three runs. The 8-7 Tigers host Plymouth today.

Scoring in every inning, the Whitko baseball team notched a 16-6 win over Triton in six innings Saturday in South Whitley. Tallying 15 hits, Ethan Nicodemus and Ryan Weigold each had three for Whitko, with Nicodemus also driving in five runs and scoring three himself. The 15-5 Wildcats host Class 2A No. 1 Northfield today in Three Rivers Conference action, while Triton is in Northern State Conference play at Bremen.

In girls tennis action Saturday, 13th-ranked Carroll won the Angola Invitational with 45 points, while Wawasee tied for fourth with 10 and Whitko was eighth with four. In the finals, Wawasee’s Esther Hermann fell 6-1, 6-0 to Carroll’s Rachel Sutton in the No. 1 singles championship match. Whitko’s No. 1 doubles team of Abby Marshall and Laura Alfieri finished third, defeating Fort Wayne North Side 7-6, 6-3 in the third-place match. Wawasee hosts Plymouth today and Whitko is also the courts today, traveling to Central Noble.

Saturday in Goshen
At Saturday’s Goshen Relays, the Fairfield girls track and field team won the championship with 95 points, while Whitko was fifth with 59.5 and Wawasee was seventh with 56. Wawasee’s Courtney Linnemeier won one heat of the 1600 in 5:30.39 and teammate Jen Slabaugh won the other heat in 5:40.00. Jordan Edington also claimed a first-place finish for Wawasee in the shot put (36-5). For Whitko, it didn’t win any events, but Miranda Terrill was second in the high jump (5-2) and Brigit Nemitz followed Slabaugh in the second running of the 1600 (5:46.41). Whitko hosts Tippecanoe Valley and North Miami today, while Wawasee preps for Tuesday’s Northern Lakes Conference Championships at Warsaw.
