For their hard work and dedication to academics, hundreds of Warsaw Community High School students were recognized and honored Thursday.
The 12th annual WCHS Renaissance Recognition Convocation was held for more than two hours in the Tiger Dean. The theme this year was "Let's Make A ... Deal Or No Deal," based on the popular television game show.
The annual event recognizes many students who achieved greatly in the areas of attendance, citizenship and academics, as well as teachers, staff and volunteers for their work. Besides certificates, trophies and medals, students also had opportunities to win cash prizes, laptop computers with printers donated by Biomet, or a 1998 Mercury Tracer from The Car Company.
Those students with perfect attendance were eligible to win the car. From the list of students, four names were drawn to compete in a game of "Deal or No Deal." Winning the car by picking folder No. 3 was sophomore Caitie Simpson.
Winning laptop computers with printers, donated by Biomet, were seniors Laura McNulty and Mark Glova. Their names were drawn randomly from the list of students with an "A" grade point average. An "A" GPA is 10 or higher on a 12-point scale.
During the event, WCHS announced its volunteer of the year. The volunteer of the year is selected by a committee of parents and WCHS staff. Criteria used to select the award recipient included depth of involvement, number of areas of involvement, years of involvement and number of recommendations. This year, Patty Lenon was announced as the volunteer of the year.
For more award recipients from the convocation Thursday, see page 7A and 8A in today's Times-Union. Other award winners not in today's issue will be listed in Tuesday's education section of the Times-Union.
