Monday the Warsaw athletic department announced the hiring of two new coaches to fill positions at the high school. Tanya Coon and Scott Bauer will be the newest coaches at Warsaw Community High School.
Scott Bauer has been named the boys soccer coach at Warsaw. A counselor at the special ed co-op for the past three years, Bauer will begin his head coaching career in Warsaw.
After earning a degree in history and playing soccer for four years at Grace College, Bauer went to Indiana-Purdue University in Fort Wayne, where he earned a degree in secondary education. He later earned a master's degree from IPFW while working full time.
Bauer was an assistant soccer coach at Grace College for two years in the 1980s.
Tanya Coon will begin her coaching career with the Warsaw volleyball team as she replaces Jamie Byron. Coon will also teach science at Edgewood Middle School and at the high school. A graduate of Blackburn University in Carlinville, Ill., she played volleyball for four years while earning a teaching degree and coaching endorsement.
At Monday's school board meeting, one citizen asked why the school chose Coon when he understood there was another candidate more qualified to coach volleyball.
Warsaw Athletic Director Dave Fulkerson replied that priority was given to individuals within the school system. Fulkerson also said only two candidates applied for the position.
"We sent information to papers in the fall and again in the spring, but we did not get much response," said Fulkerson.
The new coaches will meet with their teams in the next few weeks and will kick off their inaugural coaching seasons in the fall.
