Thursday was an unusual weekday at Rozella Ford Golf Course. The Warsaw Tigers and West Noble Chargers were the only teams scheduled for a meet, but several other high school girls golf teams also were playing the course to practice for tomorrow's sectional.
In the only competitive match of the day, Warsaw defeated West Noble 192-224. Although the 192 was good enough for the Tigers to win the match, it was a high score for the Tigers, who average in the mid-180s on their home course.
"We shot a little high tonight," said Warsaw coach Bob Turner. "This was our high round for the year. It was a typical textbook scenario. It's the last match of the year, senior night, and the night before homecoming. I'm not too shocked about the 192. There were a lot of distractions."
However, the Tigers knew that even if they didn't shoot their best round of golf, they would still have a good chance to get the win.
"We knew we would probably win tonight," said Turner. "I think the girls were looking ahead to the sectional Saturday."
However, the Tiger's high score is something many teams would like to have on a good day. The top four Warsaw scores were each below 50. Jaci Thallemer and Lara Reed shot 45s, while Kerri Wrobel added a 46 and Erin Elliott had a 49.
Even Warsaw's high varsity scorer, Abby Schori, was not too shabby. Schori's 52 equalled West Noble's lowest scores on the night from leaders Mandy Slone and Anita Zollars.
One would think that after several days of rain, the wetness of the course would be a factor in the unusually high score for the Tigers, but Turner said no.
"The course was not too bad," said Turner. "There were some soft spots, but that was not much of a factor because the course has very good drainage. The grass is a little long because of the rain, but overall the course is in good shape."
However, one hole in particular causes problems for almost every golfer at Rozella Ford, and Thursday was no exception.
"Hole No. 7 always creates problems," said Turner. "It's the one hole that seems to shake people up. Then they have a little trouble with the next hole if they are not careful."
But the Tigers made up for any problems they may have had on hole No. 7 by doing well on their par 3's.
"We played well on the par 3's," said Turner. "They are heavily bunkered, but we had a good number of pars on those holes tonight."
The Tigers, at 15-1, have exceeded Turner's preseason expectations.
"I'm tickled to death to be 15-1," said Turner. "I'm not too distraught about tonight's score. I think we'll do well Saturday. The girls have the confidence to play well at the sectional."
The Tigers finish the regular season 15-1, and will host the Warsaw Sectional tomorrow.
