While both squads had impressive individual performances, it was depth that led Warsaw’s boys and girls cross country teams to dominating wins in their own invitational Tuesday evening. Hosting the Warsaw Cross Country Classic, the Tigers and Lady Tigers made things look easy, as the boys scored 30 points to beat 10 other teams and the girls scored 34 points and topped nine other teams. Huntington North finished a distant second to Warsaw in both events as a team, as the Lady Vikings posted a five-runner score of 72 and the Vikings finished with 86 points. “This isn’t the easiest course in the world,” said Warsaw boys coach Jim Mills, whose team had all five of its scoring runners finish in the top 13 of the 166-person race. “This course is deceivingly hard,” he added. “This time of year, 16:30, 16:40 is pretty good. We’re trying to keep everyone healthy. We don’t have a clear frontrunner like we’ve had in the past, but I think we can be pretty good.” Warsaw’s Owen Glogovsky won the boys 5K race in a time of 16:39.55, finishing 12 seconds ahead of runner-up Landon Miller of Fairfield. “Owen has established himself as our top runner,” said Mills. “Owen is doing all the right things, and everybody else is buying in.” Warsaw’s Daniel Messenger finished third in 16:52.37, while the rest of the Tigers’ scoring runners included Nick Bergen (7th, 17:20.10), Jonathan Beres (10th, 17:31.94) and Avery Torres (13th, 17:41.60). Northfield (92), NorthWood (96) and Columbia City (150) rounded out the top five boys teams. Whitko was ninth with 244 points, while Tippecanoe Valley finished 11th with 288 points. In the girls 5K race, Northfield’s Jenna Halderman won with a time of 19:02.45, while Lady Tigers were led by Allison Miller’s second-place time of 19:32.18. All five of Warsaw’s scoring runners in the girls race finished in the top nine. “I saw a lot of good things tonight,” said first-year Warsaw girls coach Matthew Campbell. “To have all five girls in the top nine is awesome.” Other scoring runners for the Lady Tigers included Anna Craig (4th, 20:02.45), Emma Haywood (7th, 20:22.96), Brooke Rhodes (20:33.53) and Claire Kehler (20:43.03). Northfield (72), Columbia City (124) and Angola (147) rounded out the top five teams in the girls competition. Whitko finished eighth with 219 points, while Tippecanoe Valley was ninth with 246 points.
