Warsaw Golfers Win Joe Harris Shootout

Posted
The weather was near-perfect Tuesday evening, as was the outcome for Warsaw’s boys golf team.
Hosting the nine-team, 18-hole Joe Harris Shootout at Rozella Ford, the second-ranked Tigers continued to show signs of improvement and won with a team score of 305.
Jon Schram earned medalist honors with a 72, while Jonny Hollar shot 76, Tim Ahlersmeyer fired a 77 and Ryan Cultice and Evan Cultice finished with 80 and 82, respetively.
“It’s always good to win, but right now we’re focused on improvement and growing as a team,” said Warsaw coach Ben Barkey. “We didn’t talk about winning because it’s our invite or anything like that. We talked about what we needed to do to execute. We talked about being the champion of this shot, and winning this shot, not the tournament.”
NorthWood, ranked 14th in the state and the team that beat Warsaw by eight strokes in Saturday’s Wawasee Invite, finished second Tuesday with a 308.
Triton finished third with a 317, followed by Warsaw’s second team (322), Plymouth (322), Wawasee (323), Canterbury (327), Wabash (346) and Rochester (371).
Warsaw’s second team was led by 79s from Brandon Eckert and Josh Ahlersmeyer, while Will Petro shot 80, Reid Cameron carded an 84 and Jacob Foster finished with an 87.
The Tigers have competed in four invitationals this season, finishing second three times prior to Tuesday’s event at Rozella Ford.
“I’m really happy for our team,” said Schram, who will join former teammate Tyler Ostrom next year at Ball State University. “It’s been frustrating to finish second. It feels good to finally finish first. I think once we all click at the same time we’re going to be pretty good.”
The Tigers are pretty good right now.
Add up all the teams Warsaw has golfed against in the four invites and it owns a record of 62-3.
Outside of the weekend loss to NorthWood, the Tigers have lost to top-ranked Columbus North twice by a combined three strokes.
Triton was led by the second-place individual finish of Quentyn Carpenter, as the Ball State-bound standout shot 73.
Ryan Rapp carded a 75 for the Trojans, while Tanner Shepherd and Greg Music shot 80 and 89, respectively, and Lucas Shafer finished with a 95.
“It wasn’t good today,” said Triton coach Jack Carpenter. “We had flashes of good from our our 1, 2 and 3 players, but our finishes weren’t good. You always hope to improve, and we were a little worse tonight than when we were last week here against Warsaw.”
Last week, in cold and windy conditions, Warsaw beat Triton 311-313.
Jeffrey Moore led Wawasee with a 79, while Tristen Atwood and Luke Jackson fired 81s, Mason Germanprez shot 82 and Dylan Cousins carded an 88.
“I thought we played reasonably well,” said Wawasee coach Steve Coverstone. “We had four scores around 80. We just need to get a couple of scores in the middle 70s and we will be very near where we need to be.”
