Warsaw Golfers Top Triton Trojans

Posted
Coach Ben Barkey’s Warsaw boys golf team turned in its best 18-hole score of the season Wednesday on a chilly, windy evening at Rozella Ford.
Barkey, however, made it clear his player’s aren’t satisfied and are focused on getting better each day.
Playing the Triton Trojans on the par-70 course, the Tigers carded a four-man score of 332, winning the match by 12 strokes.
Warsaw beat its previous best score of the season by eight strokes.
“None of our guys are satisfied with a 332, but here’s what I’m happy about ... that we had five or six scores that were solid for today’s weather,” said Barkey. “It’s nice to build confidence and momentum having those kind of scores.
“I like what I see, and now it’s just trying to figure out our lineup. Hopefully as we compete everyday in practice, those five guys, whoever it is, will continue to get better. We’ll be fine, we just need to be consistent.”
Michael Jensen led Warsaw’s varsity team with an 80, while Sam Yeager turned in an 83, and Luke Delp and Jacob LaLonde carded 84 and 85, respectively.
Luke Johnson rounded out the Tigers’ varsity lineup with a 91.
Part of the reason Barkey said he’s still trying to figure out his lineup is because the Warsaw JV team beat the varsity by four strokes Wednesday.
The Tigers’ best round was a 78 turned in by Tommy Meier.
The rest of Warsaw’s JV lineup included Tim Rata (81), Chase Byron (83), Rob Sullivan (86) and Trenton Rapp (91).
“We have eight guys that have all competed and played varsity, and we’re trying to find that consistent top five,” said Barkey. “Our best score was on JV, our third-best score was on JV. Our best score, who was playing No. 6 tonight, was playing No. 1 last week. That’s a snapshot of how we’re trying to find out what this team is, and when we do we’re gonna be really good, we’re gonna be competitive.
“We have a lot of young guys that have the potential, that have posted good scores in years past, it’s just trying to become consistent.”
Jordan Anderson led Triton with an 82, while Isaac Wall and Beau Hepler shot 84 and 88, respectively.
The rest of the Trojans’ lineup included Braden Kreft (90) and Bryce Swihart (91).
Triton’s JV team, led by Max Eads’ 92, shot a four-man score of 379.
“It’s disappointing because we took too many high numbers,” said Triton coach Jack Carpenter, who is known for being honest and straight to the point. “Club selection is sometimes a mystery to me. Course management is sometimes a mystery to me. Those are things we’re going to learn.
“We have a young squad, a freshman, a couple sophomores, a junior, and a senior. My senior finished triple (bogey), double, triple, I think, and still shoots 82. That’s disappointing right there.
“That’s kind of where we’re at. As I tell people, we’ve got good scores for Nos. 4 and 5, we just don’t have the 1, 2, and 3 scores right now.”
Triton will play in the Marshall County Match Saturday at Mystic Hills, while Warsaw will play at South Shore Saturday in the Wawasee Invite.
