Warsaw Golfers Host Bob Turner Classic

LEESBURG – The Warsaw Tigers hosted the invitational, but it was the NorthWood Panthers and the Carroll Chargers who made themselves right at home.
In the 11-team, 18-hole Bob Turner Classic at Tippecanoe Lake Country Club Monday, eighth-ranked NorthWood won with a four-man score of 298, while Carroll was three strokes behind in second.
Warsaw, ranked 12th in the latest poll, finished third with a 306, followed by Triton (308), No. 9 Bishop Dwenger (309), Penn (314), Homestead (314), Canterbury (316), Wawasee (327), Tippecanoe Valley (339) and Warsaw’s JV team (340).
“We had good scores, but with this being a par-70 course, we needed to do better,” said Warsaw coach Ben Barkey. “I would have been happy with a sub-305, but 306 is fine. We have to keep working. Losing to NorthWood again doesn’t affect us, but it’s a sign we need to keep getting better.”
Jon Schram led the Tigers with a 74, while Tim Ahlersmeyer shot 75, Jonny Hollar carded a 77, Evan Cultice finished with an 80 and Will Petro rouned out Warsaw’s varsity lineup with an 82.
Warsaw’s JV team was led by Brandon Eckert’s 82, while Ryan Cultice shot 83, Josh Ahlersmeyer finished with an 86 and Reid Cameron and Jacob Foster shot 89 and 90, respectively.
Two Warsaw players competed as individuals, as Curtis Archer shot 100 and Tyler Paseka finished with a 103.
Carroll’s Garrett Leeper earned medasist honors with a 5-under 65, while NorthWood’s Dylan Gessinger was second with a 69 and Triton’s Quentyn Carpenter was third after firing a 71.
“His scramble game was working today,” Triton coach Jack Carpenter said of his son. “I think he hit three fairways. It’s a good score, especially the way he played off the tee.”
Other scores for Triton included Ryan Rapp’s 74, Lucas Shafer’s 80, Greg Music’s 83 and Tanner Shepherd’s 85.
Warsaw and NorthWood shared the Northern Lakes Conference championship this season.
In Saturday’s conference match, the Tigers beat the Panthers by two strokes at Maplecrest in Goshen.
Two days later, however, NorthWood got the best of Warsaw for the fourth time this season.
“(Gessinger’s) 69 is a great score,” said Barkey. “That’s the second time he’s shot a 69 against us in an 18-hole match, and they beat us both times. That’s a great score on this course, and we should have had our guys closer to that today.”
The Tigers have played in eight 18-hole tournaments this season, winning two and finishing second in five prior to Monday’s third-place effort.
Cal Heinisch led Wawasee with a 78, posting the only sub-80 score for the Warriors.
Dylan Cousins carded an 81 for Wawasee, while Luke Jackson shot 83 and Jeffrey Moore and Tristen Atwood carded an 85 and 86, respectively.
“We still have too many big numbers,” said Wawasee coach Steve Coverstone. “For us, it’s the same story over and over. A 327 is right where we should be, but if you look at the individual scores, we can be better.”
Tanner Neeley and Josh Tucker led Valley with 85s, while Ben Shriver shot 86 and Bryce Zimpelman and Trevor Neeley finished with 98s.
