LEESBURG – The Warsaw Tigers didn’t win Tuesday’s Bob Turner Classic at Tippecanoe Lake Country Club.
With the state tournament little more than a week away, however, they did shoot their best four-man, 18-hole score of the season.
Led by Ryan Cultice’s 2-over 72, 18th-ranked Warsaw’s black team – its varsity squad – finished third in the 11-team field with a 303.
NorthWood, paced by individual medalist Alec Dutkowski’s 68, won the team championship with a 291, while No. 5 Fort Wayne Bishop Dwenger finished second at 296.
“I’m really happy to see Ryan Cultice shoot a 72,” said Warsaw coach Ben Barkey, whose team’s previous best score this season was a 311 in the Joe Harris Shootout at Rozella Ford.
“I’m very excited for Ryan,” added Barkey. “That’s a huge confidence booster for him and our team. He’s always had the capability to do that.”
Jonny Hollar shot 74 for the Tigers, while the rest of Warsaw’s black squad included Will Petro’s 75, Brandon Eckert’s 82 and Michael Jensen’s 84.
Warsaw’s orange team, which carded a 351, was led by a pair of 84s from Reid Cameron and Josh Ahlersmeyer, while Tim Rata shot 85 and Andrew Gauger finished with a 98.
Playing as individuals, Robbie Sullivan and Kole Komdeur shot 96 and 97, respectively, for the Tigers.
“Our guys are familiar with this course,” said Barkey. “When you get to play on a familiar course it’s great for your confidence. We need to carry this over to some away courses.”
Homestead and Penn both shot 317s, while the rest of the 11-team field included Canterbury (318), Elkhart Memorial (321), Wawasee (328), Triton (334) and Tippecanoe Valley (350).
Tristen Atwood led Wawasee with a 75, but no other Warrior shot below 80.
Geoffrey Moore carded an 82, while Cal Heinish shot 87, Mason Germanprez shot 88 and Rasmus Rich finished with a 92.
“That was a really good round by Tristen,” said Wawasee coach Steve Coverstone. “He played solid all day. If he didn’t have some trouble putting, it would have been even better.”
For Triton, Tanner Shepherd led the way with a 74, while the rest of the Trojans’ lineup included Lucas Shafer’s 83, Brandon Kreft’s 88, Greg Music’s 89 and Jordan Anderson’s 95.
Bryce Zimpleman led Tippecanoe Valley with a 78, while Tanner Neeley shot 86, Ben Shriver and Josh Tucker carded 93s and Trevor Neeley shot 94.
“I’m pleased with Bryce’s round,” said Valley coach Roger Moriarty. “He played fairly decent. Putting was our biggest nemesis today. We didn’t play smart and get the ball below the hole. Other than that, for the first time on this course, it wasn’t bad.”
