Warsaw Golfers Beat Wawasee

Posted
When there’s a loss in a close contest, it’s easy to find places where a little bit here or there might have changed the outcome.
Such was the case for Wawasee after the boys golf team lost 165-171 to Warsaw at Stonehenge Golf Club Wednesday.
“(Hole) number nine killed us,” Wawasee head coach Steve Coverstone said. “They beat us by nine shots there.”
Warrior senior Jeffrey Moore was the medalist, shooting a 1-under par 35. Kyle Weideman had a 43, Cal Heinisch a 44 and Cam Adams a 49.
Of course, Coverstone saw other opportunities to make up six shots, but as far as he’s concerned it’s been the same issue for the Warriors all season.
“Big numbers, that’s what gets us,” he said. “Shooting 171, that’s not terrible here. Some of the guys had never played at Stonehenge before, so I’m not going to say we played bad. But we did have a couple of big holes that really hurt.
“We’d love to get another shot at the course; it’d mean we made regional. We just can’t have eights, sevens and nines and expect to win against a team like Warsaw.”
The Tigers were paced by Tim Rata’s 38, followed by Tommy Meier and Michael Jensen at 42 and Luke Delp at 45.
“We’re pleased,” Warsaw head coach Ben Barkey said. “It was kinda windy, kinda cold. We had a nice score of 38 by Tim Rata; he’s been playing really great, so we’re really proud of him and his hard work.
“We had a handful of 42s and then kicked to 45. It’s alright; we don’t want to keep too many 42s, but we did get a win, and that’s always nice, especially against Wawasee. They’ve beaten us the last two years, that I can remember, in a nine-hole match.
“Coverstone always has his team ready to play, and we’re grateful we can leave today with a victory.”
Warsaw’s win left both teams at 4-1 in the Northern Lakes Conference. Wawasee fell to 12-3 overall, and Warsaw improved to 6-3.
The Warriors, along with Goshen, take on Northridge at Meadow Valley Golf Club in Middlebury on Thursday.
The Tigers will take on Plymouth and Elkhart Memorial at Christiana Creek Country Club in Elkhart on Thursday.
