Warsaw Girls Track Team Ends Wawasee's Domination

Posted

If there is one sport where Wawasee has owned Warsaw in recent years, it's girls track and field.

That is, until Thursday night, when Warsaw defeated Wawasee 92-31 in a Northern Lakes Conference meet.

"One thing I asked the girls just before the meet, 'If there's one thing you can give to your senior teammates, it's a win over Wawasee,'" Warsaw coach Paul Boyd said. "They have never experienced that.

"What do they do? They go out and beat them by 60 points."

The Tigers, who beat Wawasee for the first time in at least five years, also recorded their first winning season in several years. They finished the regular season 5-4-1 overall and 3-2-1 in the NLC.

Wawasee fell to 4-7 overall and 1-5 in the NLC.

Warsaw took first place in 11 of the 15 events.

The Tigers stripped the suspense out of the meet early, leading 13-1 after two events. They claimed all five points available by winning the 3,200 relay and then grabbed eight of nine points in the discus.

Taking first for Warsaw were Ginny Gardonio (discus, shot put), Summer Boyd (1,600, 800), Liz Wiggins (100 hurdles), Nicole Derenzo (100), Chelsea Boyd (400) and Jartu Schulterbrandt (200). Warsaw also won all three relays, the 400, 1,600 and 3,200.

Staci Weisser highlighted Wawasee's evening by winning the high jump and the long jump.

But the story was how Warsaw ended Wawasee's domination.

Now Warsaw and Wawasee prepare for Tuesday's NLC Tournament at Northridge.

"I think our team is coming around at the right time," Paul Boyd said. "We had the Kokomo Relays last weekend, where we did real well (first place). Then we had a letdown at Marion.

"We're not a fast team, but we're a consistent team. Our girls are focused. They're getting the feeling of winning. I don't think they've had that feeling for a while. That's important."
