Warsaw Girls Soccer Team's NLC Win In Plymouth Leads Roundup

PLYMOUTH — Opening its Northern Lakes Conference season at Plymouth Tuesday, the Warsaw girls soccer team remained undefeated. Although they did give up their first goals of the season, Warsaw (4-0) did get the 3-2 victory over the Plymouth Lady Pilgrims (2-1). Senior Meredith Hollar got the scoring going in the 13th minute, converting a pass from Brooklyn Jackson into a goal. The score was Hollar’s eighth of the season and gives her 50 for her career, 11 shy of tying 2004 graduate Ashley Kitchens’ school record of 61. After Plymouth’s Courtney Hersick tied the game at 1-1, Warsaw’s Danielle Hutcherson and Erica Gauger scored in the 45th and 58th minutes, respectively. Hersick netted another goal with eight minutes to play, but the Warsaw defense held up for the victory. Warsaw outshot Plymouth 15-9, leading to Plymouth goalkeeper Becca Houser’s 12 saves, while Warsaw’s Abby Schue had seven. The Lady Tigers return to NLC play Thursday at home against NorthWood. The Wawasee girls golf team opened the Northern Lakes Conference season with a slim 229-230 victory over Goshen at Maplecrest Country Club in Goshen. Goshen’s Teage Minier was the medalist, shooting a 45, while Wawasee got a 54 out of Alex Goralczyk, as well as 58s from Mikala Mawhorter, Kylee Rostochak and a 59 from Courtney McDaniel. Traveling to Mishawaka Tuesday, the Triton boys tennis team lost 3-2 to Mishawaka Marian. With wins from Dean Howdeshell (No. 3 singles) and the No. 1 doubles team of Pete Kauffman and Lucas Shafer, Triton had a shot at the victory at No. 2 doubles. That tandem won the opening set 6-4, but lost a second-set tiebreaker. In the third set, Marian’s Cody Daub and Nick Gerstbauer claimed the 3-2 victory, taking the individual match as well as the team match.
