Warsaw Girls Soccer Clinches Share Of NLC

Posted

GOSHEN -ÊThe Warsaw girls soccer team came from behind to defeat Goshen 3-1 and win a share of the Northern Lakes Conference title Monday night.

Goshen took a 1-0 lead with three minutes left in the first period and held it until 10 minutes into the second period.

"Warsaw dominated the game," said Tiger coach Brent Wildman. "We outshot the other team 9-1, but Goshen managed to score their one goal in the first period."

Then Warsaw's Kari Wildman tied the score at 1-all with her first goal of the evening.

Seven minutes later, Kristi Haddad score the go-ahead goal on an assist from Lauren Witzky.

Wildman struck again four minutes later when the ball rebounded off the goalie and she was there to capitalize.

The win ties Warsaw with Concord for first place in the Northern Lakes Conference. Both squads are 6-0-1 in NLC play.

"This is the first NLC title for our varsity girls," said Brent Wildman. "It's only the fourth year for the sport in conference. We've been second, third, fifth but never first. This was a closely contested title."

The Tigers defeated a tough Northridge team 1-0 last week to put them in the position to vie for the title.

"We knew this game had to be won," said Brent Wildman. "The girls came out focused and ready to play tonight."

The Tigers had 18 shots on goal to Goshen's two.

"Warsaw carried the game, especially the second period," said Brent Wildman. "We domintated the game extremely well. We wanted a victory, and we worked hard to bring it home."

Warsaw is 11-2-2 overall and 6-0-1. The Tigers hosts CMA Wednesday in a make-up game.

Warrior Netters Face Underdog Role In Concord Sectional Tonight

By Dale hubler, Times-Union Sports Writer

SYRACUSE - Go ahead, call Roger Brady and his Wawasee High School boys tennis team underdogs.

The first-year coach and his players don't seem to mind.

Falling to county rival Warsaw 4-1 in the regular season, the Warriors were labeled sectional underdogs.

All Wawasee did was beat a good Tippecanoe Valley team 4-1, and then upend the host Tigers 3-2 for the sectional title.

Tonight at 5 p.m. in the Concord Regional Wawasee will face off with Fairfield.

Against the 20-0 Falcons, again Wawasee is in the underdog role.

"Obviously we're gonna be called the underdogs," Brady, whose Warriors are 11-5, said. "We have nothing to lose.

"We're just gonna go play tennis and not worry about winning or losing. Fairfield has to prove they can beat us again."

The Falcons defeated Wawasee 5-0 earlier in the season.

"We do have a different lineup this time," Brady said. "We feel confident about our doubles team, and if we can pick up a win at one of the singles positions we'll be in good shape."

Wawasee's lineup will feature Evan Gerard, Scott Beasley and Chris Trobaugh at the three singles positions.

At doubles, Logan Pilcher and Mickey Ashpole play the top spot, while Rosten Trobaugh and Ben Knisely make up the No. 2 doubles team.

In Wawasee's 5-0 loss to Fairfield earlier in the year, Chris Trobaugh and Knisely played at the junior varsity level.
