Warsaw Girls Sink Vikings

Posted
Three goals in a span of 27 seconds helped the Warsaw Community High School varsity girls soccer team defeat visiting Huntington North 6-0 Thursday.

Already in front 2-0, Warsaw got a goal from junior Emma Dickerhoff at the 12:41 mark, then another from junior Kelly Wildman at 12:22, followed by yet another from sophomore Erica Gauger at 12:14."That was a quick spurt of goals," Warsaw coach Dan Miller said. " I've been coaching for almost 13 years and that was as fast as it gets.

"It was a good minute from Erica Gauger," Miller added. "She went in and scored a goal and supplied two assists. She's a starter, but she re-entered the game and really put the game away there."

The win puts Warsaw at 2-0 on the season and the team has outscored its two opponents 10-0.

"We have a lot of talent with eight returning starters," Miller said. "Defensively, we're a lot better this year. We also return our top two scorers from last year."

Junior Hannah Cutshall and sophomore Meredith Hollar are those two returning scorers, and Cutshall got the day's scoring started in the eighth minute, while Hollar went to the bench early with an injury.

"She just got a knock on her knee," Miller said about Hollar's early-game injury. "She'll be alright, but we wanted to hold her out with the conference games coming up."

Warsaw opens its Northern Lakes Conference schedule at Plymouth Tuesday, followed by a home game against NorthWood Thursday.

"We have high expectations for this season," Miller said. "We're excited about this result, but we're really focused on the two (Northern Lakes Conference) games we have next week."

Against Huntington North, Warsaw had little trouble breaking the defense, leading to numerous break aways, with Wildman scoring the first of her two goals in the 13th minute and sophmore Madison Myers closing out the scoring with a goal in the 59th minute.

"Huntington North runs and offsides trap, that's really aggressive and we did a good job with it," Miller said. "We worked a lot of diagonal balls to get behind the defense. We executed very well."

That execution led to 28 shots to Huntington North's 5, with 18 of those shots being on goal.
